An electronic publication of the Community Action Partnership's Risk Mitigation Center

Dear Community Action Colleagues:

As the heat of summer moves into full swing, so do the activities and opportunities in Community Action! It was great to see many of you at CAPLAW's national conference in Portland. The Partnership is working to provide continued training and technical assistance around areas of the CSBG Organizational Standards including Risk Assessment and Needs Assessment. We hope you will join us for these webinars to delve deeper into the available online tools to make the assessment process more efficient. We are also gearing up for our Annual Convention in August and finalizing numerous workshops related to the efforts of the Learning Communities Resource Center, the Risk Mitigation Center, and the Organizational Standards Center of Excellence - there will be numerous opportunities for learning and networking so be sure to get the discounted registration available through Friday.

Have a wonderful Holiday weekend.

Sincerely,

Jarle Crocker, PhD

UPCOMING 2 PART WEBINAR SERIES ON RISK ASSESSMENT PROCESS

July 23 and August 13

 2:00 ET/1:00 CT/12:00 MT/11:00 PT

Are you concerned with how to get started with COE-developed CSBG Organizational Standard 4.6 "An organization-wide, comprehensive, risk assessment has been completed within the past 2 years and reported to the governing board"? Once you have completed a risk assessment, do you know what the next steps are?

Join Community Action Partnership and the Nonprofit Risk Management Center for a two part webinar series to think about the process around using the online risk assessment tool. Learn about how to initiate a risk assessment, what staff should participate, likely documents and preparation work to have on hand, and how to organize the follow-up process.

These webinars are free, but pre-registration is required.  You may sign up for one or both of the webinars, though it is suggested that you attend both.  These webinars are spaced a few weeks apart so that you could learn about the process in July, begin your risk assessment between the webinars, and ask specific follow-up questions in August.

1. How to search, add data, and change the location of a map included in your Comprehensive Community Needs Assessment;

2. How to access and use advanced mapping tools like the Query Data, Select Data, and Mask Tools;

3. How to save, share, export, and download your maps to your personal profile and the Community Action Partnership "Hub"

This webinar is free, but Registration is required.

RESOURCE OF THE MONTH:

MY RISK POLICIES

 Did you know that the online Risk Assessment tool done in partnership with the Nonprofit Risk Management Center has two different tools in one?  In addition to the risk assessment, there is a "My Risk Policies" tool where you can customize over 150 different policies to fit your needs

There are 7 COE-developed CSBG Organizational Standards that refer to having a policy or policies in place.  Four of them can be created through the "My Risk Policies" tool:

  • Standard 5.6: Each governing board member has signed a conflict of interest policy within the past 2 years.
  • Standard 7.6: The organization has a policy in place for regular written evaluation of employees by their supervisors.
  • Standard 7.7: The organization has a whistleblower policy that has been approved by the governing board.
  • Standard 8.13: The organization has a written policy in place for record retention and destruction.
The other CSBG Organizational Standards that refer to a policy or policies are much broader -7.1 around personnel policies, 8.10 on fiscal policies, and 8.11 on procurement policy.  But the "My Risk Policies" tool would be a good place to start to review or update any of those.
