Results 2011
As reported in Top New York Verdicts of 2011,
published in the New York Law Journal, our firm secured the largest negligence settlement in 2011, in this State:
$25 million - for the family of a 43 year-old man and his two-year-old daughter who suffered 70% and 50% total body surface burns respectively, when a gas explosion occurred in their apartment. The father, tragically, died from his injuries leaving behind his wife and three children.
Our firm is also proud to announce that 13 of the recoveries listed within that publication were secured by our firm.

Boating Accidents and the Law
The summer is in full swing and given
New York's extensive coastal areas and lake regions people who own boats are enjoying the benefits of this spate of hot weather.
But we only need to recall the events of the last few weeks to realize how dangerous operating a boat can be.
Three children drowned in the Town of Oyster Bay waters when the yacht they were on capsized and trapped them in the cabin. Before that, a fishing boat near the Robert Moses bridge was rammed by a speedboat whose operator was cited for operating it under the influence of alcohol. One of the fisherman was killed and left behind two children, ages 11 and 6. A fun day in the sun can quickly turn into a tragedy which can haunt the survivors for a lifetime.
Obviously no amount of money can replace a loved one or restore severed limbs or reverse a paralysis but, the law provides remedies in the form of monetary compensation for the injured and the families of those killed in boating accidents. Our law provides the basis for an analysis of fault in a boating collision case.

So you were in a Motor Vehicle Accident. Now what?
by Vito A. Cannavo, Esq.
Being in an accident can be devastating and leave you feeling overwhelmed which is why you need a lawyer to protect your rights. All too often an insurance company will attempt to contact you after an accident to get a "statement". Chances are it will be a statement that favors the insurance company and not you. Or maybe they will offer you money to settle your case if you sign a "release"- for probably a lot less money than you deserve.
An attorney can immediately protect your rights by doing a number of things. First, he or she can conduct a professional investigation of your accident. He will have an investigator obtain the police report and speak to witnesses while their memories are still fresh. He will also arrange to have photographs taken of the scene and the vehicles involved. An investigation can also include checking to see if your car has a "Black Box" or Event Data Recorder (EDR), which are in most cars manufactured since 2005. An EDR records certain information from a vehicle immediately before and/or during a serious crash, including speed. For more information on EDR, visit click here. With the right information in hand, your lawyer will be able to commence a lawsuit to obtain for you the compensation that you deserve.

Zadroga for First Responders
More than ten years after the September 11th terrorist attacks, lawyers at our firm continue to secure compensation for first responders sickened by exposures to toxins and dust at the World Trade Center Site. We represented 363 firefighters and families of deceased firefighters in the original September 11th Victim Compensation Fund ("VCF"). Our firm secured more than $265 million for them, at no charge, earning the National Law Journal's 2004 Pro Bono Award. Following the closure of the VCF, injured World Trade Center responders continued to seek our help. We filed the first lawsuits against the City of New York and its contractors for their failure to provide respirators to rescue and recovery workers. The World Trade Center Disaster Site Litigation, as the case became known, lasted for over seven years in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. During that time, the number of individuals filing lawsuits grew to over 10,000, with our firm representing 676 of them. Appointed Plaintiffs Co-Liaison counsel, we assumed a leading role in a long, difficult fight to secure compensation for all of these brave individuals. Continued...

Younger woman generally don't consider
themselves at risk for breast cancer, however, this horrific disease can strike at any age. Women in their twenties, and even thirties, are not thinking about the possibility of breast cancer, because they likely have not yet even had a mammogram.
The American Cancer Society recommends women have a baseline mammogram between the ages of 35 and 40, and then after the age of 40, on a yearly basis. For women with a family history of breast cancer, the surveillance may be even more frequent.
Diagnosing breast cancer in a younger woman is often more difficult on a mammogram because their breast tissue is generally denser, and it is harder for the x-ray beam to "see" through dense breast tissue. By the time a lump is felt in a young woman's breast tissue, it is often advanced in stage and will require extensive medical treatment.
In addition, breast cancer in younger woman is more aggressive and less likely to respond to treatment. Therefore, the early diagnosis of breast cancer can save young women's lives.
