Representatives from the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce were on hand to celebrate, as was Assemblyman Tom Lackey and a field representative from Congressman Steve Knight's office.

7 Habits of Highly Effective People
Habit of the Month: BE PROACTIVE

iLEAD Schools embrace the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, from the best-selling book by Dr. Stephen R. Covey. Published in 1989, it is one of the best-selling books of all time. The habits are simple and based upon principles that stand the test of time. Principles are akin to lighthouses--the waves may crash against them, the wind may howl around them, but they remain steadfast. Principles are based upon universal truths, not fads, trends, or new ways of thinking.

Habit 1 is Be Proactive. This is the habit of choice. Victor Frankl once wrote, "When we can no longer change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves." We are not, then, a product of our circumstances but a product of our choices. We can choose our responses to the challenges that present themselves in our lives. We can, as Dr. Covey explains, "create our own weather."

In other words, being proactive means thinking ahead and being prepared. We are free to choose and are responsible for our choices. We are the programmers of our own lives. Here is the paradigm: "I can pause between the stimulus and my response. I can choose how to react based upon principles. As a result, I am more self-aware, I use more proactive language, I can take greater initiative, and I can be a creative force in my own life."

How do we apply this habit in the classroom? We use everyday circumstances to empower our learners to make good choices. When we see this happening, we name it and praise it and talk about it. When a learner needs guidance in this area, we ask the right questions to help them see that there is much they can do to solve their own problem or alleviate their current circumstances. Can't write in your journal because you don't have a pencil? What can you do about that? Unhappy because somebody is teasing you? You can choose how to respond in order to empower yourself. Don't understand a math concept? What questions can you ask or what might you do in order to gain understanding?

Being proactive is a positive choice. It is a habit of the heart and the mind. "You can live your life," wrote Albert Einstein, "as if nothing is a miracle." Or, he continues, "You can life your life as if everything is a miracle."

The choice is yours!

We encourage our families to provide healthy food choices for meals and snacks. For birthday celebrations and other class celebrations, we encourage non-edible items (bubbles, stationery, pencils, etc.), or the donation of a book to the class. If families want to bring in baked items, we ask that parents choose treats listed in our Health and Wellness Policy or that are as healthy and organic as possible. Please speak to your child's facilitator prior to bringing in items for celebrations. We look forward to assisting our families in establishing and maintaining lifelong healthy eating habits.

2nd Graders Think Like Businesspeople

What does the E in iLEAD stand for? Yes, entrepreneurial!

Our second graders have begun to think like businesspeople. They are proudly working and preparing for their Presentation of Learning this Thursday, November 20, guided by their driving question: How can we, as producers, create healthy snack options for our consumers?

Second graders have learned about healthy vs. non-healthy foods, they have learned about producers and consumers and explored what it means to work together and have a business.

Each group of learners has planned what healthy product they wish to sell, how they will advertise their products, and how much they will sell their products for. As a group, our learners have also decided that all the profits made will go to their next field trip. They are now excitedly preparing their supplies to create what they feel are the most delicious and healthy snacks for their consumers--you, the iLEAD community.

3rd Graders Explore Sea Life

Our third graders are embarking on their next project, which deals with sea life and oceans. They were able to kick off the project at the Aquarium of the Pacific, where they learned about sea life through a scavenger hunt. The adventure began in the theatre and ended with learners finding several species of sea animals. They had some fun petting sharks and rays as well. The learners are now very excited about the ocean and protecting it.

Dancing Feet
Several 5th, 6th, and 7th grade learners are participating in an after-school ballroom dance program called Dancing Feet. They are proud to be joining with seventeen other Antelope Valley schools as part of this nonprofit organization. So far, the dancers have learned some line dances, the merengue, some salsa, and beginning swing. They will be progressing to tango and quick step next.

They joined with the other schools for a flapjack breakfast fund-raiser at Applebee's on November 8 and 15 and had fun serving their supporters pancakes and practicing their dancing skills in the restaurant.

They will participate in a ballroom dance competition in February. What a unique opportunity for our learners!
