Juvenile Diabetes Fund-raising Walk at the Rose Bowl
Saturday, November 15

A special event is coming up where we can support one of our learners, Dustin Herman. You may be aware that Dustin has type 1 diabetes. If you're not aware, it's probably because Dustin manages himself without fanfare or complaint and with courage and dignity.

On Saturday, November 15, there will be a juvenile diabetes fund-raising walk at the Rose Bowl. All are invited to participate in the walk as a member of Team Dustin. Some families from iLEAD are already planning to attend. The walk itself starts at 11:00 a.m. and goes around the Rose Bowl, approximately three miles. Dustin's dad, Danny Herman, is arranging to meet and caravan that morning. If you would like to drive there with this group, or for any other questions about the walk, you can contact him at 661-406-9312.

You can sign up to join Team Dustin or make a donation online at www.JDRF.com. Choose the link for finding a walk in Los Angeles (Rose Bowl), then click "find a team," then type "Team Dustin" in the search bar.

Let's show our support to Dustin and his family!

7 Habits of Highly Effective People
Habit of the Month:  BE PROACTIVE

iLEAD Schools embrace the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, from the best-selling book by Dr. Stephen R. Covey. Published in 1989, it is one of the best-selling books of all time. The habits are simple and based upon principles that stand the test of time. Principles are akin to lighthouses--the waves may crash against them, the wind may howl around them, but they remain steadfast. Principles are based upon universal truths, not fads, trends, or new ways of thinking.

Habit 1 is Be Proactive. This is the habit of choice. Victor Frankl once wrote, "When we can no longer change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves." We are not, then, a product of our circumstances but a product of our choices. We can choose our responses to the challenges that present themselves in our lives. We can, as Dr. Covey explains, "create our own weather."

In other words, being proactive means thinking ahead and being prepared. We are free to choose and are responsible for our choices. We are the programmers of our own lives. Here is the paradigm: "I can pause between the stimulus and my response. I can choose how to react based upon principles. As a result, I am more self-aware, I use more proactive language, I can take greater initiative, and I can be a creative force in my own life."

How do we apply this habit in the classroom? We use everyday circumstances to empower our learners to make good choices. When we see this happening, we name it and praise it and talk about it. When a learner needs guidance in this area, we ask the right questions to help them see that there is much they can do to solve their own problem or alleviate their current circumstances. Can't write in your journal because you don't have a pencil? What can you do about that? Unhappy because somebody is teasing you? You can choose how to respond in order to empower yourself. Don't understand a math concept? What questions can you ask or what might you do in order to gain understanding?

Being proactive is a positive choice. It is a habit of the heart and the mind. "You can live your life," wrote Albert Einstein, "as if nothing is a miracle." Or, he continues, "You can life your life as if everything is a miracle."

The choice is yours!

iLEAD Lancaster Health and Wellness Policy

iLEAD Lancaster has adopted a Health and Wellness Policy. Click here to view the entire policy

We encourage our families to provide healthy food choices for meals and snacks. For birthday celebrations and other class celebrations, we encourage non-edible items (bubbles, stationery, pencils, etc.), or the donation of a book to the class. If families want to bring in baked items, we ask that parents choose treats listed in our Health and Wellness Policy or that are as healthy and organic as possible. Please speak to your child's facilitator prior to bringing in items for celebrations. We look forward to assisting our families in establishing and maintaining lifelong healthy eating habits.

iLEAD Sparkles

Our 1st graders' first Presentation of Learning of the year was also a celebration of learning. Our learners acted as museum docents as they guided guests and explained their solar system projects. The learners explored planets, volcanoes, space shuttle engineering, and sustainable energy. The POL even sparked the interest of local NASA scientist David Alexander, who made his way to iLEAD to join in on the fun!
