BYOD HAS NOT WON

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) seems like a simplistic approach to managing office telecom expenses. You let your employees, who already have smart devices, use them for work and compensate them in some manner. Easy, right? The reality is that there are significant downsides to BYOD. And it would appear that some managers are coming to that realization as well. Strategy Analytics released worldwide research that shows that not only is the number of BYOD devices increasing, but also the number of company-owned devices issued to employees as well as the total number of devices shipped. Over 35 percent of smartphones used for business purposes in Q3 were corporate-liable versus 32 percent for Q3 2012 and 31 percent in Q1 2013. This increase is significant considering the steady growth of BYOD volume as well as the expectation that BYOD would continue to cannibalize corporate-liable sales. The bottom line is that the rate of growth of BYOD is slowing and the old standby of handing devices out to employees is, ever so slightly, reasserting itself.

BYOD is an extraordinarily powerful platform, especially for organizations that need to conserve capital. It is deceptively complex, however, and not a universal solution. It seems, at least according to Strategy Analytics, that organizations are beginning to understand its complexities. TIPS FOR PROTECTING SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES

Just as large enterprise businesses have a responsibility to protect their networks and customer data from cyber criminals, so do small and medium-sized businesses. Identity Theft 911 has identified the following tips to keep you protected:

Safe browsing: The first step in a holistic approach to data security is to look for ways to keep your own internal gatekeepers on the right page. As part of your company’s ongoing security training and awareness program, remind employees of safe browsing techniques.

Security tools: Even with the best education efforts and diligence exercised by employees, there’s still the possibility malicious software will make its way into your network. Considering the very real risk these threats pose, businesses should proactively leverage other tools already available to them to help avoid the potential for a data breach.

Encryption: One strategy that offers significant protection without a lot of fuss is encryption. To ensure customer data remains safe, consider encrypting the sensitive and confidential data on your network. That way, if a hacker is able to gain access to your network, at least the most valuable information you have still won’t be exposed. Data breaches are costly even beyond fines, penalties, and the cost of repairing your systems. They also can have devastating effects on a small business’s reputation. Customers’ loss of trust is a difficult thing to rebuild. Encryption is a step that takes only a small amount of effort and resources up front, but can prevent big problems down the road. WEB ACRONYMS YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF

If you thought you were just getting the hang of web acronyms — LMAO, FTW, TTYL — think again. The Internet, as widespread and boundless as it is, has an entirely new batch for you to learn just in time for them to go out of style.

Ever heard of FTFY? How about GOMB, DIAF or GLHF? If these new Internetisms don't seem worth your time, you can just FGDAI (Fuhgedaboudit).

  • FTFY: Fixed That for You
  • TL;DR: Too Long; Didn’t Read
  • SMEXI: Smart + Sexy
  • GOMB: Get Off My Back
  • GLHF: Good Luck, Have Fun
  • FWIW: For What It’s Worth
  • IWN: I Would Never
  • SO: Significant Other
  • MFW: My Face When
  • IIRC: If I Remember Correctly

GET YOUR IT IN ORDER FOR THE NEW YEAR

The New Year is here, and many have made resolutions to be more productive in 2014. If you think you need to shackle yourself to your desk to accomplish this, think again. A few minor changes to your daily habits and workspace dcor can make all the difference in helping you to focus and get more done.

Devote some time to ignoring emails. Receiving email alerts can be distracting. When working on a tight deadline, consider working in off-line mode or setting up an out-of-office reply for a few hours.

Move around. Don't limit yourself to your primary desk chair. Spend portions of the workday standing or working at height-adjusted work surfaces. Take your next conference call as a walking call.

Streamline your space. Tidy up and remove unneeded papers, old meeting notes and yesterday's lunch. Having an organized work area fosters focus.

Have a jam session at your desk. Wearing headphones doesn't always mean you're antisocial. When working, listening to your favorite tunes can help you get into the zone and knock out your to-do list.

In addition to these tips for productivity, LinkSource can help you get your IT department working in the most efficient way possible. With solutions like TotalTEM for maximizing savings and finding the most appropriate telecom approach for your business, cloud services with dynamic bandwidth and IT desktop support, LinkSource is your number one tool for productivity in 2014.
