Three Faith Traditions and the Problem of Domestic Abuse
During a cold and blustery Saturday afternoon, November 24,at Trinity Lutheran Church, David Myers (Reform Jew), Pastor Laura Stancher (Lutheran), and Esra Ata (Sunni Muslim) reflected on how certain interpretations of teachings in their traditions may have contributed to the problem of domestic abuse while also making the case that each of their traditions can be reasonably interpreted as condemning all forms of domestic abuse. Each pointed to texts that, properly interpreted, provide a basis for viewing men and women as equal partners deserving of mutual respect. Although the turnout was small, the discussion was good. Representatives of the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center were present to provide their perspectives on the issue of religion and domestic abuse.
