Does Public Policy Happen For You or To You?
Find Out at ACT's Public Policy Summit and Education Forum

"CMAQ." "5307." "MAP-21." "Performance measures." Not sure what we mean? That's OK. The ACT Public Policy Summit and Education Forum, March 23-25 in Washington, D.C., is meant for you.

Not everyone is a policy guru, and you don't have to be to attend this conference. The Summit will give you a better understanding of the policies and programs that affect you and your organization. We'll show you how to take advantage of the opportunities that exist and protect yourself from the pitfalls.

Sessions planned include:

  • Advocacy 101: A basic primer on public policy
  • Where is the Money: A summary of available federal funding opportunities
  • Think Globally, ACT Locally: A session dedicated to helping you leverage your assets and become a force at the local level
  • Telling Your Story: A session on how to illustrate your success so everyone knows about it

Already have the basics and looking for that next level? We have that too! We have roundtables scheduled on:

  • TDM and Emergency Preparedness
  • Mobility Management: Integrating Transit and TDM
  • TNCs: A Disruptive Force or the Next Generation of TDM?
  • What's New in Active Transportation

Public policy either happens for you or to you. This event will provide you with the tools you need to make sure public policy helps you.

Commuter Benefit Parity Act of 2015 Introduced

A bipartisan U.S. House of Representatives coalition recently introduced the Commuter Benefit Parity Act of 2015. This bipartisan legislation would establish parity between the parking and transit portions of the transportation fringe benefit by setting the monthly caps for both at $235 per month.

During the past several years, members of Congress have worked together to bring permanent parity to transit and parking pre-tax benefits. Without congressional action, those who use the transit benefit would face up to $1,440 a year in additional tax burden. See the full story here.

ACT Leader Spotlight
Sonya Landrum Serves ACT National Board from Lone Star State

ACT: Tell us about your background.

Sonya: I am a proud Generation X'er, born in northeast Louisiana and now living in Texas. I earned a B.S. in civil engineering from Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and an MBA from Amberton University in Garland, Texas.

ACT: How did you get involved in transportation as a career?

Sonya: As a resident of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, I have experienced the effects of rapid population growth on the transportation system, and seen how congestion and air quality issues can affect our quality of life. As a transportation planner, I work to improve the efficiency of the transportation system and increase the use of alternative transportation options to reduce the demand on that system.

ACT: What is the main focus of your work?

Sonya: My career has been focused around the traffic and transportation engineering/planning fields. I am a principal transportation planner for the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG), the metropolitan planning organization (MPO) for the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The North Central Texas region is comprised of 16 counties with a population of nearly 6.5 million residents. The cities of Dallas and Fort Worth are the urban centers for the region. I manage the travel demand management and transportation safety program areas for NCTCOG.

ACT: How long have you been an ACT member?

Sonya: I joined in 2006. I attended the ACT International Conference in Boston and I've been hooked ever since. In Boston I realized the great resource that ACT is to the TDM community. Being new to the TDM industry then, I appreciated ACT's mission to support mobility management professionals and organization members in their efforts to reduce traffic congestion, conserve energy, and improve air quality.

ACT: What motivated you to seek a leadership role?

Sonya: I decided to run for a position on the national board of directors because I understood and appreciated the important role ACT plays in this industry. I wanted to be a part of efforts to introduce people to the great work that ACT has done and will continue to do within the TDM industry. I want to see ACT grow in both membership and relevance.

ACT: What do you want to achieve while you're on the board?

Sonya: My top two goals and priorities in this role are to increase ACT membership through recruitment and retention efforts, and continue efforts to bring more professional development opportunities to ACT members.

ACT: Anything you'd like to share from your personal life?

Sonya: My two-year-old daughter, Gamiya, is my brightest joy. Her name means "to stand proud and strong; to lead," and she's definitely living up to her name already. She keeps mommy and daddy on our toes. My favorite night of the week is Thursday. Why? Because it's T.V. night in America. I'm a Scandal Gladiator and proud of it.

Rep. Candice Miller Introduces Vehicle-to-Infrastructure Safety Technology Investment Flexibility Act of 2015
Rep. Candice Miller (R-MI)

Rep. Candice Miller (R-MI) recently introduced HR 910 to clarify the definition of, and eligibility for, vehicle-to-infrastructure technology. Technology is changing fast. The way our vehicles communicate with each other, with the infrastructure, and with passengers is evolving quickly and public policy must recognize these advancements.

ACT believes that technology and innovation should be a cornerstone of any transportation bill. Much has changed since the federal government first began building the interstate transportation network. Over the years, federal policies allowed for and promoted innovation in developing the transportation network. As we look to the future, there is a need for continued advancement as vehicles, mobile communications, signalization and the transportation network we use change.
