Save Transit Benefit Parity
|
At press time, the House Ways & Means Committee was tentatively looking to mark-up a package of individual tax extenders today. As the legislative language stands now, the parking and transit benefits would remain frozen at $130 (transit/vanpool)/$250 (parking). The language would also eliminate the bike benefit.
ACT members and those associated with ACT members are asked to immediately contact their Members of Congress--particularly House Ways & Means Committee majority members--and ask them to take action on HR 2288.
Below is a list of targeted members as well as their staff who handle these issues. Their constituents are negatively affected by the lack of parity.
The basic message we would like ACT members to leave is:
It is our understanding that the House Ways & Means Committee is looking to mark-up legislation to extend a series of personal tax issues. We urge you to weigh in with committee staff and leadership and ask them to include bi-partisan legislation from HR 2288 and create revenue-neutral parity at $220/month. Please weigh in today.
TOP-PRIORITY MEMBERS OF CONGRESS:
- Congressman Erik Paulsen (MN): Mike.Stober@mail.house.gov. The Northstar commuter rail line runs along his district and monthly fares exceed $200/month. Many major employers in the region offer the transit benefit.
- Congressman Peter Roskam (IL): Mike.Dankler@mail.house.gov. Represents suburban Chicago. Many of his constituents would be affected.
- Congressman David Reichert (WA): Zachary.Rudisill@mail.house.gov. Represents suburban Seattle.
- Congressman Jim Gerlach (PA): Dante.Cutrona@mail.house.gov. Represents suburban Philadelphia.
- Congressman Mike Kelly (PA): Lori.Prater@mail.house.gov. Represents large district in Western Pennsylvania; vanpoolers into Pittsburgh pay in excess of $200/month.
- Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins (KS): Colin.Brainard@mail.house.gov. Represents a large district in Kansas; significant number of vanpoolers into federal facilities, including Department of Justice and military.
Additionally, we encourage members to make their voice heard at www.commuterbenefitsworkforus.com.

ACT Membership Director TJ Cantwell is responsible for the development and implementation of comprehensive membership development programs, including the recruitment of new members and the retention of current members.
TJ grew up in Wheaton, Ill., a suburb of Chicago. He earned his bachelors degree from the University of Virginia and his masters in public policy at American University.

GVF Transportation Bike to Work Day participants
|
Thanks to Chrissy Mittura, GVF's marketing and outreach coordinator, for this info:
- GVF celebrated its 3rd Annual Bike to Work Day on May 21. The event was in conjunction with Communities in Motion's National Bike to Work Challenge, which began May 1 and runs until September 30; this is the sixth year of the challenge.
- The bike-to-work day began with two groups leaving from the Spring Mill Train Station and Lower Perkiomen Valley Park, one of which was led by County Commission Vice Chair Leslie Richards. Cyclists included employees from Montgomery County (Pennsylvania), the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Traffic Planning Design, Montgomery County District Attorney's "Wheels for Justice" bike team, and many others.
- Cyclists were encouraged to register through their National Bike to Work Challenge, which puts local residents among cyclists from across the country in a fun, competitive manner. By 2015 Montgomery County, Penn., will add another 11 miles of trails in Pennypack Park, connections to Chester Valley Trail and additions to trails in Pottstown.
