Full Speed Ahead! A Message from ACT Interim Executive Director Mark Wright...
|
I am excited to step in as ACT's interim executive director following Henry Wallmeyer's departure.
As some of you may know I served as ACT's executive director previously,
back in 2007-2008. I'm honored to serve once again. ACT has been a dynamic organization since its formation decades ago, and that spirit clearly continues.
As your interim executive director, I'll strive to continue and build on the excellent work the team has accomplished during the last four months. The whole team has an ethic of strong member service and sincere concern for the organization's well-being.
We're also mindful of the need for good, clear communication and a steady hand as we move forward together in pursuing the association's mission and as ACT leadership works to select a permanent executive director. I already have established relationships, and great respect, for ACT's continuing management team at IPI, including Shawn Conrad, Helen Sullivan, TJ Cantwell, Michelle Jones and Tina Altman. So, we won't skip a beat in this transition.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have or simply to say hello. I can be reached at wright@actweb.org, or 571.699.3064.
Sincerely,
Mark Wright

May is National Bike Month |
May means bicycling for thousands of commuters in cities throughout the U.S. and Canada, as many TDM organizations partner with bicycle advocacy groups and other stakeholders to spotlight the benefits of two-wheeled, pedal-powered transportation. From bike-to-work and bike-to-school days to interesting Mother's Day spin-offs, National Bike Month presents rich opportunities to advance your organization's multi-modal message.
When: Bike to Work Day (BTWD) is officially May 16, although some (such as the East Bay area of Alameda and Contra Costa counties in California) celebrate May 8.
Why: After what was a particularly harsh winter for many U.S. states, BTWD offers a twofer: the chance to celebrate spring while encouraging solo drivers to explore the joys of biking to work, in the hope that one day in May can inspire many more such journeys whenever seasonable weather allows.
Who: The League of American Bicyclists started BTWD way back in 1956.
Opportunity: BTWD is a great chance to recognize local leaders who have been (or could be with a little nudging) champions of bicycle commuting. It's a natural time to hold public conversations about bike lanes, safety, and related issues. And employers and local businesses--including bike retailers and equipment suppliers--are natural choices to sponsor and spotlight BTWD events. Bike to work days/weeks can be a good time to highlight local bike-sharing services and programs.
Invitation: Email a short summary of the results of your organization's, company's, or jurisdiction's bike to work day/week program to Mark Wright at wright@actweb.org later in May (put BTWD in the subject line). We'll highlight a few stories in a future issue of ACT Connections.

New York Times' Op-Ed Shares New Research on Social Interaction as Benefit of Commuting |
"Hello, Stranger," an opinion piece in the New York Times (Sunday, April 27) by Elizabeth Dunn and Michael Norton focuses on the benefits of talking to strangers as proven by new research conducted among commuters. Behavioral scientists Dunn and Norton approached Chicago commuters and provided incentives (Starbucks gift cards) in return for participation in an experiment conducted during their commute to assess the effects of talking to fellow commuters during their morning train or public bus trip.
Based on their research results, the opportunity for social contact--and the benefits it conveys--may be yet another reason to use public transportation. Read more here.
