Tuesday, March 25 is Deadline to Submit to Speak at 2014 ACT International Conference

ACT is currently accepting speaking proposals for the 2014 ACT International Conference, which will take place August 2-6 in San Francisco--this is where hundreds of transportation demand management (TDM) professionals share innovative ideas, learn from top experts, network with colleagues, and build legislative support through intensive training workshops, top-notch professional development sessions, networking events, and off-site activities.

If you've ever thought about sharing your expertise and helping shape the future of the industry by giving a presentation at the largest gathering of TDM professionals in the world, now is the time to submit your proposal!

Experienced and articulate professionals are invited to submit proposals for speaker presentations that will illustrate case studies, illuminate important issues, demonstrate how-to knowledge, and increase the professionalism of attendees. Possible topic areas include, but are not limited to, vanpooling, carpooling, shuttles, telework, sustainable development, university, research, employer, cycling, pedestrian, public policy, and innovation in TDM.

Proposals are due March 25, 2014; there is no limit to the number you may submit.

Visit here for more information and to submit. We look forward to seeing you in August!

Schedule Announced for June 10-11 Innovation in Mobility Public Policy Summit. Register Today!

The two-day Innovation in Mobility Public Policy Summit will bring forward-thinking transportation professionals together in Washington, D.C., to discuss new developments in shared-use mobility and foster further collaboration between governments and private sector mobility providers. Building on the successful Shared Use Mobility Summit in San Francisco last October, this event will feature panel discussions and presentations by influential mobility leaders in the public sector along with experts in the fields of carsharing, one-way carsharing, peer-to-peer (P2P) carsharing, public bikesharing, ridesharing, and technology.

The summit encourages participants to engage in lively discussions to foster public-private and cross-mode collaboration. Take this opportunity to:

  • Discover how new transportation options are being introduced to local communities.
  • Examine the ways government and shared-use providers can work together to create more seamless, community-wide transportation systems.
  • Connect even more individuals to mobility services.
  • Investigate the role of emerging technologies in shared-use mobility, including ways to reach more of the traveling public.

DOT Begins Proposed Performance Metrics Roll-Out

The U.S. Department of Transportation began to roll out proposed performance metrics as required by the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century (MAP-21) Act. The first set of proposed performance metrics focuses on safety; information can be found here. The ACT Public Policy Council will review the proposed metrics and offer suggestions during the next public policy meeting on April 9, 2014. For more information, contact Public Policy Chair Jon Martz at Jon.Martz@vride.com.

Uber, Sidecar, and Lyft Get Regulatory, Editorial Attention

The Seattle City Council passed a resolution that limits the number of drivers from Uber Lyft, SideCar, on the road; each service may have 150 drivers working at any time. Those services are also required to meet state insurance rules already imposed on traditional taxis.

Seattle is one of many areas dealing with this new breed of mobility providers, which have caused a stir in the transportation industry. In an effort to avoid the regulations imposed on traditional taxis, the companies launched a massive campaign to identify themselves as ridesharing providers. ACT Government Relations Specialist Jason Pavluchuk recently blogged for Mobility Lab about how that affects the TDM world. Read it and comment here.

ACT Takes Stage at New England Parking Council Annual Conference
Henry Wallmeyer, ACT Executive Director

ACT Executive Director Henry Wallmeyer addressed more than 200 attendees of the New England Parking Council (NEPC) Annual Conference at their Opening Conference Luncheon on March 11. Invited by Jim Barr, NEPC Board member and chapter representative to the ACT Board of Directors, Wallmeyer addressed the mostly-parking-centric audience about what ACT is, who its members are, what it does, and what it has in store for the TDM community. This was a great opportunity to educate people about TDM and what TDM professionals do, and how pieces of the transportation puzzle can be put together when they work together with parking professionals, making for more effective transportation solutions. Wallmeyer also highlighted the great opportunities that ACT Chapters and the International Parking Institute Allied State and Regional Associations have to be able to collaborate on initiatives and meetings.
