A letter from North High Principal Cynthia Richardson:
Please share this information with our Alumni.
Hello, I want to inform you about this awesome opportunity for some of our athletes. We would like to make sure North athletes are nominated for the Statesman Journal Mid-Valley Sports Awards. Please nominate students in the four categories listed in the body of this letter. The deadline for nominations is Monday, February 15th. Thanks for your help.
The buzz is building about the inaugural Mid-Valley Sports Awards program on June 7 at Salem Convention Center.
The red-carpet event, featuring NFL Hall of Famer and Fox TV personality Terry Bradshaw as the keynote speaker, will honor the many talented student athletes that represent local high schools. The Statesman Journal is thrilled to be planning this event, which will include the presentation of more than 50 awards, including all of our Athletes of the Week.
Never before has there been an event like this focused on just the Mid-Valley region. We support our local schools and student athletes and felt it was important to create an event that recognizes their achievements and creates memories that will last a lifetime.
In addition to individual awards, we will present the Capitol Cup to the school that has sustained the most success for the entire year.
We expect some 50 athletes to be honored at the event, and each will each receive a complimentary ticket to the awards show. All nominees also will be invited to a VIP reception to meet and have a photo taken with Terry Bradshaw.
Here's where we need your help. We will present five awards that will be nominated and voted on by the public, and the nomination deadline is Feb. 15. Click on the award to nominate an athlete.
* Comeback Player Award: The Comeback Award will honor one person who has suffered an injury or has been removed from competition for other reasons and returned to excel.
* Courage Award: The Courage Award will honor one person who excelled at the intersection of athletics and life. Nominees should exhibit leadership and drive to take the lead on issues within their schools or community.
* Heart and Desire Award: The Heart & Desire Award will honor one person who is the heart of their team and shows the desire to win. Nominees are likely not the star or even starter on their team but show the heart to lead and desire to win and do whatever it takes to help the team succeed.
* Fan Experience Award: The Fan Experience Award will honor the school that offers the best game-day experience across all sports. This award honors the bands, cheerleaders and fans that make each game unique to their school and special to the athletes.

So mark your calendar - June 7 at Salem Convention Center - and get your students excited. We can't wait to celebrate with you.
