Graduation 2015

On the evening of June 5, over 360 Vikings received their diplomas in a memorable ceremony on the football field at the school.  Student speakers Blake Vehrs and Bianca Llamas shared memories and hopes.  Below are a few photos from that great event.

Viking Association Scholarships

Each year the Alumni Association gives two scholarships to graduating seniors in honor of two distinguished alumni of our school.

Mark O. Hatfield (class of 1940) was a World War II veteran, a Willamette University law professor, a State Legislator, Oregon's Secretary of State, Governor of Oregon, a finally a five-tern United States Senator.  The scholarship, worth $2000 this year,  is based on four characteristics exemplified by Senator Hatfield: scholarship, leadership, character, and service.

This year's recipient, Caleb Roberts, is a valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA including many AP and honors classes.  He is an insightful writer and demonstrates intellectual curiosity, self-discipline, and emotional maturity.  He was a pivotal member of the Viking basketball team and a member of the ASB leadership team for 3 years.  He was named a Statesman newspaper Academic All-Star. Caleb was also the recipient of numerous other awards: COSA (Confederation of Oregon School Administrators), Salem-Keizer Education Association, NAACP, Willamette Academic, OADA Bi-Mart Spirit of a Champion, Optimist Club of Salem Outstanding Academic Achievement, North's Outstanding Writing Award, and the Principal's Award.

Edith Starrett Green (class of 1927) taught school in Salem for 11 years before dong radio work, then serving as a leader in the Oregon Education Association.  She was elected to Congress in 1955 and served in the House of Representatives for nine terms.  While there she led the passage of Title IX legislation which granted equality to women in education and athletics.

This scholarship is for $1000 and is presented to a graduating senior on the basic of scholarship and athletics.  This year's honoree is Gillian Bissell.  She is the top JROTC cadet at North High, serving as Battalion Adjutant, Executive Officer, and Battalion commander, ultimately attaining the rank of Cadet Lieutenant Colonel.  She was the Captain of the JROTC's award-winning unarmed drill team which finished 10th in the nation and commanded the Color Guard which place 5th in the nation.  She accumulated over 325 hours of community service and is a recipient of the President's Volunteer Service Award. Gillian also received awards from the Daughters of the American Revolution,  as a Military Order of the the world Wars outstanding Senior, and as a Chemeketa Community College Scholar.

Spring Sports

Last month we updated you on the Greater Valley Conference All-League track athletes, with Tiffany Wall winning the high jump and Larry Nedelec placing second in the shot put.  Both athletes competed in the State Track Meet, along with Abraham Rodriguez who placed third in the Conference meet in the high hurdles.

Baseball had several All-Conference players.  Senior first baseman Andy Bevens and junior infielder Noah Boatwright were chosen first team All-Conference.  Second team placers were junior pitcher Cameron Jolly and  junior catcher Cole Hamilton.  Senior infielder Alex Alvarado  and senior Alex Roberts were selected for third team Conference honors, while senior pitcher Jeff Holden  made honorable mention.  Excellent showing Viking baseball players!
