Winter Sports Wrapup

With the new configuration of sports conferences in Oregon, North High finds itself in the Greater Valley Conference.  In addition to the six Salem-Keizer schools, North competes with McMinnville, Forest Grove and West Albany (the old Albany High School).  The Viking wrestlers had the highest finish among North High teams, placing 5th in Conference. Several Vikings placed high in the conference or were chosen to league all-star teams.

Seniors Sam Hirons and Cameron Harris won their weight divisions at the Conference meet.  Adan Ramos, a junior, placed 3rd.  All three qualified for the State Meet where Harris took second place honors.

Twelfth-grader Kaly Alik garnered third-team All-Conference in girls' basketball, while Miya O'Connell, also a senior, was chosen honorable mention.  On the boys' side senior Caleb Roberts was selected third team, and freshman Gavin Baughman made honorable mention.  Two boys were honored for having 4.0 GPAs:  Caleb Roberts and junior Jimmy Van.  The Statesman-Journal newspaper honors one student from each of the area high schools as an Academic All-Star, an honor based on grades, SAT scores, activities, and an essay.  Caleb Roberts was selected as North High's All-Star.

North High JROTC Scores Big in Two-State Competition

At the Oregon-Washington Two-State Championships March 7, the Cadets of the Viking Battalion carried off highest honors, defeating all other JROTC progams both states.

The Lady Vikings Unarmed Drill team, commanded by junior Mariela Ramos, won a decisive victory, their third championship in six years.  The Vanir Platoon Armed Drill team, led by junior Mackenzie Lawrence finished 3rd overall.  In the Color Guard #1 competition, the Vikings' Varangian Guard, commanded by sophomore Diana Naranjo, took third place honors, while the Fiorir Hirtir commanded by senior Gillian Bissell, also placed third.  The Physical Fitness team placed second, the Sporter Rifle squad fifth, and the Precision Air Rifle team second.

Viking JROTC squads take Two-State Championship

These finishes by the Viking gave them first place in the overall standings for the second time in three years.  The Precision Air Rifle team will compete the last week in March in the all-service 3-Position JROTC National Championship in Ohio.  The two drill teams will compete at the National High School Drill Team Championships in Florida in early May.  You may make contributions to help these great representatives of North High and Salem be able to attend these national events.  Contact Lt. Col Dwight Morse who leads the Viking JROTC program at .

Alumni News

Hall of Fame

Nominations for the North High Hall of Fame need to be submitted by May 1 to be considered for induction in the Class of 2015. North's unique Hall of Fame has four categories: Achievement, Distinguished Lifetime, Athletics and Service, the latter open to non-graduates who have served the school in some capacity.  Individuals who have been nominated in the past, but not inducted remain in the pool of candidates and do not need to be resubmitted. Information and nomination forms can be found on the Viking Association webpage (see link in upper left of newsletter) under the "Alumni"tab.  Due to the numbers of nominations, it is wise to submit as much information as possible to help clarify why you feel you nominee is more worthy than the other submissions.

Viking Yearbooks

Check out our webpage (link in the upper left of this newsletter) to see the fruits of a new project to scan all of the Salem / North Salem High yearbooks. It is a slow process, but we currently have the complete annuals for the following years:  1909, 1913, 1915-1920, 1922-1938,1944, 1949, 1954, 1964, 1969, 1974, 1984, 1994, and 2004.  More will be added as they are completed, focusing on the years ending in "5," as their significant reunions will be coming up in 2015.

Also, under the "Reunions" tab, we are now able to post photos of your reunions.  Send them digitally to Steve Chambers at the e-mail address below.

Honor Roll

The Honor Roll features alumni of Salem and North Salem High who have received honors or who have performed services to their communities, the nation, the world, or North High.  We will publish them by class, so you can conveniently look up classmates.  But we will need your help!  There are no stories without story-tellers, so if you know of someone who has received an honor or done something noteworthy, please let us know.  We hope it catches on, because our alumni are involved in a lot of things.  We will keep the clips up for about a year.  Send in your entries to Steve Chambers at the e-mail address in the left sidebar or at the bottom of the page.  Digital photos are welcome.

If you have not already done so, please send to Steve Chambers your full contact information (name, maiden name where applicable, street address, phone number, and graduating class or if your are a friend) as this will help us keep in contact should your e-mail address change.

Please forward this newsletter to other Vikings so they can also stay in touch with the school.
