Cleanroom Bulletin
July 2015
In This Issue

This month we look at adding value to data center cleaning operations with a handheld particle counters.

If you own a Kanomax model 3887 make sure you read the bulletin about updating your software at no cost.
Continuous Monitoring in Hospitals
by Walker Petroff of CIMtechniques

WHY MONITOR?
The short answer is pretty simple--the Government and Accreditation Agencies require it. Of course that's not the only reason. Maximizing Patient Safety is atthe top of every hospital administrator's priorities list, and the monitoring of critical processes helps meet this important goal.

THE CASE FOR CONTINUOUS MONITORING
Today throughout the hospital, it is perfectly acceptable to monitor by manually taking periodic measurements. For example, the temperature inside blood bank refrigerators and freezers only needs to be sampled and recorded once every four hours. The temperature in pharmacy appliances needs only be measured at least once a day. The airborne particle counts in IV preparation cleanrooms can be sampled as seldom as once every six months (although once a month is recommended).

Of course, the results from the sampling must be recorded and made available to auditors when requested. The advantage of continuous monitoring is twofold: First and foremost, continuous monitoring will provide maximum safety by alerting personnel to an abnormal condition or trend long before it would be detected by the monthly or even daily sampling. Secondly, the measurement data required by auditors is automatically gathered and stored in a computer-based system without the risk of missing a sample, or incorrectly recording the results.

Adding Value to Data Center Cleaning Services with Handheld Particle Counters

When we talk about particle counters most of the time we focus on cleanrooms and other controlled environments, but there are many other applications where counting particulates is desirable.  These include IAQ investigation, filter testing and other applications like this month featured story: Data Center Cleaning.

In addition to temperature and humidity, particulates can also cause damage to sensitive equipment in a data center. As dust accumulates on circuit boards it reduces the cooling efficiency of the components and may cause overheating issues. A good ventilation system that creates positive pressure inside a data center can help control the amount of particulates that the equipment is exposed to, and periodic cleaning by a professional can also help control particulate levels and prevent problems from developing.

The 3887 handheld particle counter can be an invaluable tool for Data Center Cleaning companies trying to sell or show the value of their services.

Is Your 3887 Software Up To Date?

3887 We've received a few calls from customers advising that after updating their PCs with a new operating system their 3887 software has stopped working. They were running an older version of the software that shipped with their unit originally. The current version of the software is v1.10.  You can check your version number by launching the software and selecting About... under the Help menu.

If you have an outdated version please send an email to info@kanomax-usa.com or call us at 973-786-6386. We will help you with a link to download the current version of the software. There is no cost for this update, but you will need to provide a valid 3887 serial number before the link will be provided.
