Fume Hood Diagnostic Testing Kit
Pro Tips and Equipment for Fume Hood Testing

A fuManikinme hood is a local ventilation device designed to eliminate or minimize exposure to hazardous fumes, dust or other airborne particulates. Basically, the fume hood provides an area where a technician can safely work with certain hazardous materials. The fume hood is designed to contain and vent all dangerous vapors and particulates away from the worker. A typical fume hood will undergo quality testing by the manufacturer, but it is also necessary to test the fume hood in its installed state and to periodically make sure the hood is performing correctly to limit human exposure to airborne hazards. ASHRAE 110-1995 is the current industry accepted standard for this testing procedure.

The test is further broken down into different segments some or all of which may be used to test a fume hood depending on the setup and user requirements:

1) Face Velocity Test - This test involves using an anemometer to measure the rate of airflow in front of the fume hood where a worker would be standing.

2) Smoke Visualization Test - This is done in conjunction with the face velocity test. This involves introducing a visible smoke to the fume hood so that the vapor can be observed.

3) Tracer Gas Test - This involves using a diffuser made to the specifications laid out in ASHRAE drawing 110-83M. The diffuser is placed inside the fume hood and a tracer gas is released at a controlled rate.

World's Most Accurate Hot-wire Anemometer May Also be the Most Versatile
Climomaster is Designed with Your Specific Application in Mind
New Climomaster The Climomaster Hot-wire Anemometer is one of our best selling products, and it's not really a big surprise when you consider its advantages over comparable units.

It has a +/- 2% of reading accuracy which makes it the most accurate hot-wire anemometer on the market.  On top of that it offers 8 interchangeable probes that can be used without the need to recalibrate the main unit or the probes.  These probes range from simple uni-directional airflow and temperature probes to specialized high velocity and miniature probes designed to suit nearly any application.

The unit can be programmed to take a series of measurements in time intervals of your choosing and then calculate average, maximum and minimum values for measured parameters.  To read more about using this in an example application check out the full article on fume hoods (see above).

Printed Data is an Excellent Check Against Mistakes and Potential Tampering
3887 Handheld Particle Counter Hospital Application Spotlight

3887 in stand A prominent Pennsylvania based hospital system has been using the Kanomax 3887 portable particle counter for the last two years, and their Quality Assurance Manager stated the following:

"We are using the 3887 portable particle counter daily to check for ISO compliance in our cleanroom complex. I'm not sure if The Joint Commission goes that far in depth regarding cleanrooms, but USP <797> does require non-viable particles to be checked every six months at a minimum. As an effort to ensure patient safety we are going above and beyond that guideline by performing our daily counts with the 3887 unit, as well as having the cleanrooms certified every six months.

We are interested in purchasing the 3887 compatible printer, as to substantiate our future Joint Commission or FDA audits inquiring about our non-viable data. While we have checks in place to ensure that only certain people have access to the downloaded data from the 3887 units, the majority of audits we would also like to see a hard copy of the data to ensure that it has not be tampered with."

Handheld Odor Monitor Useful for IAQ Investigations
Locate odor sources and confirm effectiveness of odor remediation projects

Locate odor sources and confirm effectiveness of odor remediation projects

New handheld odor meters from Kanomax offer a highly sensitive way to track and identify odor sources. The meter is an excellent, simple-to-use tool for odor analysis. It can indicate the relative strength and odor classification numerically by comparing the odor gas to purified air.

The unit features: simple operation, flexible use for various situations, real-time sampling mode displays changes in odor strength continuously and a memory sampling mode that saves data based on the selected sampling rate. (Up to 32,732 records in up to 511 files)

Three models are available for application specific needs:
  • Model OMX-SRM: Designed for odor source at factories, incinerator plants, or effluent treatment facilities (suitable for Ethanol, Acetone, Hydrogen and similar odors)
  • OMX-ADM: Evaluates the effectiveness of deodorizing at hospitals or nursing homes etc. (good for Hydrogen Sulfide, Methyl Mercaptan, Ammonia and similar odors).
  • OMX-TDM - VOC measurements for IAQ investigation (good for VOC detection such as toluene)
Our Odor Monitor was recently the topic of conversation on IAQ Radio.  Check out Episode 308 on their website which features Kanomax Sales Manager, Tom Grillo!
