Horizon Utilities Unveils New Program

Horizon Utilities Corporation recently launched its innovative Smart Growth inspired customer connection policy. Developed in support of City of Hamilton Economic Office, Horizon's new connection policy will drive economic development by providing an incentive for companies to choose re-purposed, existing commercial and industrial buildings.

Horizon's new policy reduces connection charges and start-up costs for companies that choose infill properties over greenfield developments. Companies locating where Horizon's electrical equipment and capacity are already in place will no longer be required to pay for these assets, as is currently the case with other utilities.

The new policy is a significant incentive for companies that locate in re-purposed buildings because there are little or no direct start-up costs. No other local distribution companies in Ontario are offering this kind of incentive to their municipalities in support of economic development and environmental sustainability. Recasting Horizon's policy to tie customer connection fees to a smart growth-inspired development strategy means businesses pay only the direct costs associated with their move to an infill property."

Horizon Utilities has also created a database, with privacy protection build into the design, of all customer assets left behind in vacant buildings and of all Horizon's  distribution assets. The utility has also identified transmission station capacities by business park, to help companies with large electricity needs to identify properties with electrical infrastructure and capacity already in place.

The new database will make it easier for businesses to find sites that meet their immediate needs. Choosing to re-purpose existing, vacant buildings means minimal investments in electrical equipment will be needed to get operations up and running
