Good day!

Welcome to the May edition of the Hamilton Economic Development Newsletter.

Manufacturing Investment Activity

Anderson Water Systems, which specializes in industrial water treatment systems, will be creating fifty new full-time jobs through a $300,000 provincial government grant. The fifty positions created (this is in addition to 86 existing positions) will be full time in the fields of engineering, production, drafting, trades and support. Anderson will also commit $1 million of its own money to the project as part of an overall $5-million investment in the new Cormorant Road facility it moved into earlier this year.  Among other global business, Anderson is producing an ion exchange system to clean and recycle the water used in the oilfields of Saudi Arabia and Alberta, and in fertilizer production in Morocco.

Toshiba International Corporation (TIC) has announced that a binding agreement is in place to acquire all assets and intellectual property from Elettra Technology Inc. (ETI), a manufacturer of custom electrical industrial motors. With assets including those from former Westinghouse Motor Company Canada Ltd., the acquisition is a strategic move for TIC to add its strength in the electric motor marketplace and support the growth of TIC's industrial and infrastructure business. The new company will be named Toshiba Industrial Products Canada (TIPCA). TIPCA will relocate manufacturing to a recently renovated facility in Hamilton with added space and crane capacity, and has the ability to further grow the business in the Hamilton area.
Wordcamp

WordCamps come in all different flavors, based on the local communities that produce them, but in general, WordCamps include sessions on how to use the website publishing software WordPress more effectively.

WordCamps are attended by people ranging from blogging newbies to professional WordPress developers and consultants, and usually combine scheduled programming with conference sessions and other activities.

The first WordCamp in Hamilton will be held in late June in the downtown core.  For just $25, attendees will enjoy 7 speakers on a variety of topics throughout the one-day event, which includes continental breakfast, catered lunch, and more!

This non-profit event is being organized by members of the Hamilton web & digital media community- Dale Mugford & Martin Kuplens-Ewart of BraveNewCode, Roz Allen of Double Barrel Studios, and Nick Tomkin of Orbital.  For information, tickets and more please visit wordcamphamilton.com.
Fashionable Downtown

There are two new women's fashion boutiques in the downtown core - Girl on the Wing and La Bichette.

Girl on the Wing at 181 King Street East in the International Village Business Improvement Area is a retail boutique specializing in vintage clothing and antiques. La Bichette at 257 James Street North is a women's contemporary and vintage fashion boutique. 60% of the inventory is contemporary fashions from Los Angeles and 40% is vintage wear from a variety of sources.

The great news here is that both shops are new investments in the downtown core and that they are being run by young entrepreneurs- signaling a greater confidence in the local economic scene in the core of the city.

We wish both first time entrepreneurs the best of luck with their new investments and welcome them to the Hamilton business community.
