Good day!

Welcome to the April edition of the Hamilton Economic Development Newsletter.

Hamilton Earns International Accreditation for Economic Development

On April 3rd, the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) announced that the City of Hamilton's Economic Development Office was recognized as one of 34 economic development organizations across the globe accredited by IEDC as an Accredited Economic Development Organization (AEDO).

The AEDO program is a comprehensive peer review process that measures economic development organizations against commonly held standards in the profession. The program consists of two phases: a documentation review and an onsite visit. Each phase is designed to evaluate information about the structure, organization, funding, programs, and staff of the candidate economic development organization.

Earning the AEDO accreditation tells the community and prospects that the City of Hamilton's Economic Development Office has attained a measure of excellence assuring that their trust is well-placed and their business is in good hands. Maintenance of the AEDO status is required every three years and is accomplished through documentation submission and/or onsite visits by a team of the AEDO subcommittee.

Hamilton Economic Development Staffer Now President of Provincial Organization

Congratulations to Hamilton Economic Development Senior Business Development Consultant Jennifer Patterson, who was recently elected President of the Economic Developers Council of Ontario (EDCO). EDCO is an independent, non-profit, incorporated association of persons engaged in economic development. Today's membership embraces a broad spectrum of development individuals at all levels- each adding their specialized knowledge to the growing accumulation of valuable information available through the Council.

Members of EDCO are regularly exposed to new ideas in the ever expanding field of economic development, and members of EDCO bring a high degree of expertise and awareness to the complex business of community development. These skills are available to industrial/commercial/tourism enterprises as well as municipal policy makers who wish to broaden their community's tax base and employment opportunities.
Renew Hamilton Project Launches

The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce has launched the Renew Hamilton project. Its mission is to document, promote and accelerate the regeneration of Hamilton's built and natural environments, and will focus on documenting changes to:
  • Historic buildings
  • Heritage neighbourhoods
  • Existing infrastructure
  • Public spaces, and
  • Natural landscapes

The Renew Hamilton Project will follow signature developments over time - particularly physical changes in lower city Hamilton, mainly by creating video case studies that showcase renewal in action, an education program based on what we discover, and a speakers series devoted to renewal.

Startup Weekend Approaching

Hamilton is hosting another Startup Weekend from April 26-28 at the Radius Café. All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it's a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekend culminates with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

If you have that winning start-up idea, go to http://hamilton.startupweekend.org to sign up and for the latest StartUp Weekend information.
