Major Climate Change Conference Coming to Hamilton

Climate change is one of the most important social, environmental, and economic issues facing the world today. Despite growing efforts to mitigate, some impacts are inevitable and will be felt by communities across the country. In light of this reality, local governments in Canada are faced with a unique and pressing challenge to adapt to a changing climate and to protect the people, property, and resources within our communities. As the level of government closest to residents, municipalities also play a crucial role in educating the community and building support for local action.

The International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) and the City of Hamilton have joined forces to bring you the Livable Cities Forum on November 29 - 30, 2012 on the theme of Creating Adaptive and Resilient Communities. The event will provide a forum for municipal practitioners and elected officials to discuss the importance of urban climate change adaptation and will provide a platform to explore adaptation and its vital role at the local level. Panel discussions, plenaries, and interactive workshops will highlight the ways in which adaptation can be mainstreamed into everyday practices and policies, the innovative action being taken by Canadian municipalities, and the benefits and opportunities that come from community engagement and partnerships. Please join us for this exciting and timely event!

Creative Industries & Events Make Their Mark

It is hard to keep up with all of the great events that are happening in Hamilton because there is so much going, and such a great sense of excitement. Two of the larger events of the past few weeks included the Graphic Designers' Mashup held on October 16th and the Hamilton Music Awards held over a number of days from November 15th to 18th.

For the first time in Hamilton, a Graphic Designers' Reception, coordinated by the Economic Development Office, in cooperation with the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, the Registered Graphic Designers Association of Ontario (RGD), Cobalt Connects and Hamilton Hive, was held. An amazing crowd of almost 100 professionals gathered to network at the Chamber's new downtown offices and this event was an overwhelming success. It was clear that more events like this should be held in Hamilton.

For the ninth year in a row, the ArcelorMittal Dofasco Hamilton Music Awards, Festival and Conference was held in Hamilton and was another fantastic success. This multi-faceted event began with a conference geared towards creative students and young, talented professionals and this portion of the show is topped off by a Rising Star Search on Friday night. As if that isn't enough, there are 37 Industry Awards given out on the Saturday, 25 Music Awards given out on the Sunday, and a Lifetime Achievement award(s). The Festival portion of the event takes place over two nights in various venues throughout Hamilton's downtown core. What a way to get involved and celebrate Hamilton's rich musical talent!
