Dear friends and supporters of the EMF Safety Network,
On July 27, the pre-hearing conference for the Smart Meter opt-out proceeding was held at the CPUC in SF. Representatives in attendance included PG&E, SC&E, SDG&E, DRA, TURN, UCAN, Lake and SF counties, Wilner and Assoc, Jim Tobin law group, Aglet Consumer Alliance, Martin Homec on behalf of two groups in So Cal, Steve Martinot (Alameda group), EON and EMF Safety Network.
All three major utilities will now be accountable for offering rate payers a choice about Smart Meters. The new administrative law judge (ALJ) for the "opt out" proceedings, Amy Yip-kikugawa wants to consider all available alternatives. She asked all parties to submit proposals for opt out, or opt in, which were submitted on July 28. At the pre -conference hearing both DRA and TURN stated they support the "radio off" option.
On behalf of the EMF Safety Network I submitted this alternative:
1. Retain or restore the analog meters on both individual and community wide basis, including the removal of Smart Meter infrastructure, with the possible allowance for opt-in using fiber optics. This would apply to both gas, electric and water Smart Meters.
2. Immediately address the needs of those with health complaints and replace Smart Meters with analog meters for those who request it.
3. Impose an immediate moratorium on the installation of Smart Meters until this proceeding is finalized.

On Thursday July 28, dozens of people went to the CPUC in San Francisco to speak to the Commissioners during public comments. They were limited to one minute to talk. The first speaker stated that since the new meter was installed he was having headaches and President Peevey told him to talk to PG&E who were in the room and that they would help him. (Really??) The last speaker stated he would help anyone who wanted to remove the Smeter and send it back to PG&E in pieces and he did not care if it was against the law, that he would do time for it. The webcast can be viewed here. Click on CPUC business meeting July 28.
The next opportunity to speak to the Commissioners is on August 18 at 9 am at the CPUC in SF. (500 Van Ness Ave.) I believe it makes a difference. Prepare a one minute statement. Bring a few friends- It's going to take hundreds of people showing up and demanding a halt to this program.
