Next generation servo drives from Mitsubishi Electric boost performance, save energy and simplify system set up

Mitsubishi Electric has launched its next generation of servo systems, offering safe, user-friendly and energy-efficient motion control.

The MELSERVO MR-J4 series of servo amplifiers, complete with associated positioning units, easy to use motion modules and high end integrated motion control systems enable machine builders and end users to improve productivity and reduce energy costs. Numerous innovative and user-friendly functions have been incorporated to boost performance while minimising the time-consuming effort of engineering and setting up servo systems.

When it comes to energy saving, the MR-J4 series is leading the market and has been specifically designed with this in mind.

Maximum safety combined with optimised productivity

With the latest safety technologies, safety can be maximised with assured compliance to the most stringent standards and boost productivity at the same time. Jeremy Shinton of Mitsubishi Electric explains.

There can be few aspects of machine design that have moved so quickly in recent years as that of safety. With the introduction of new product concepts and harmonised standards which have shifted the safety ethos away from human intervention based on 'zero accidents' to risk assessments based on 'zero risk', engineers have had to work hard to keep up to date.

The market place is changing for UK machine builders

Wage and consumption levels are rising in the developing economies of Asia, including China. This is opening up an enormous market to UK machine builders and automation engineers who can help them keep production costs down. At a recent UK Machine Builder conference, hosted by Mitsubishi Electric, strategies for entering Asia and China and building sustainable business were explored.

The great rush into Asia has been underway for some years but until recently the call for manufacturing automation and production machinery had been relatively modest but now, with local labour rates increasing and domestic consumption growing, things are changing fast. In China there is a further twist in that the senior figures of national government are giving way to new leaders who are charged with growing and developing the internal economy of the country - and where China leads, its neighbours are likely to follow.

Engineering academy upgrades with Mitsubishi Electric equipment

Brinsworth Academy of Engineering in Rotherham, South Yorkshire has upgraded its training facilities so that students, apprentices and adult learners are working with current equipment and cutting-edge technologies.

Much of the new equipment has been supplied by control and automation specialists - Mitsubishi Electric - working in partnerships with SMC Pneumatics, which has supplied training rigs with actuators and other pneumatic products. As well as offering traditional engineering courses, the academy is using the new equipment to develop standard training courses and will, in the future, develop further into the fields of servos, motion and mechatronics.

Mitsubishi Electric programming software and Simple Motion Modules certified compliant with PLCopen standard

Mitsubishi Electric Europe has been awarded a Certificate of Compliance for Function Blocks for Motion Control by PLCopen for its Simple Motion Module and GX Works2 software. The certification recognises the compliance of these products with IEC61131-3 standards in the implementation of motion control function blocks, and demonstrates Mitsubishi Electric's commitment to best practice in automation system design and to this important open standard.

The certificate was handed to Oliver Giertz, Product Manager Servo/Motion Systems and Robots at Mitsubishi Electric's Factory Automation European Business Group, by Eelco van der Wal, Managing Director of PLCopen at the Hannover Fair. Oliver Giertz comments: "We are delighted to have been recognised for our compliance to IEC61131-3 - a standard which is helping to drive up performance standards in automation while driving down costs in system design, development and maintenance."
