ECHL Approves New Pro Hockey Team in Worcester to Debut in 2017

The ECHL announced on Monday, Feb. 8 that the league's Board of Governors has unanimously approved the new membership application from Worcester, Massachusetts.

Worcester will begin play in October 2017 when the Premier "AA" Hockey League opens its 30th season, making it the third-longest tenured professional hockey league behind only the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League.

Worcester will play its home games at the DCU Center, a 12,239-seat building located in downtown Worcester. The DCU Center opened in 1982 and underwent a multi-million-dollar renovation that was completed in 2013. VIDEO

Franklin Realty Advisors and Great Point Investments unveiled the name of the development taking place in the downtown towers located at 100 and 120 Front Street -- Mercantile Center.

The mixed-use property contains 642,300 square feet of office and retail space, and a 1,647 space structured parking garage. Renovation and construction is expected to take 6 - 9 months.
