Try bicycling to work in May

May is National Bike Month. NOACA encourages commuters to leave their cars at home and try bicycling to work for improved health and a pollution-free trip. Commuters traveling lengthy distances can take transit for part of their trip. All of the Greater Cleveland RTA's buses sport bike racks, and commuters are permitted to take bicycles on the HealthLine or rapid transit trains. If you seek someone with whom to share the ride, find a biking companion on the Ohio Bike Buddies website.

Bike Cleveland, a northeast Ohio bicycle advocacy organization, is promoting a variety of bike rides, bicycle care events, fund-raisers and other fun activities for May and throughout the summer. Visit their website for a comprehensive list of events and enjoy the ride!

NOACA requests proposals for Transportation Asset Management Program

NOACA seeks proposals from qualified firms to develop a regional Transportation Asset Management Program (TAMP) to improve and sustain the condition of the highway  infrastructure toward a state of good repair. The program will allow NOACA to leverage transportation asset management data and methods within the transportation planning process to make informed, cost-effective program decisions and better use existing transportation assets to maximize transportation system performance, improve customer satisfaction, minimize life-cycle costs, make more informed program decisions and be a model for other Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs).

NOACA will accept proposals through 12 noon on Friday, May 23. If you have questions about the request for proposals, check the NOACA website or contact Director of Planning Kathy Sarli.

Comment on proposed transportation projects

NOACA welcomes public review and comment on all of its federally funded programs and projects. For the next month, descriptions of proposed road, safety, enhancement and Safe Routes to Schools projects from Cuyahoga, Lake, Lorain and Medina counties will be available on the website for review and comment. At its July 11, 2014, meeting, the NOACA Board of Directors will consider adding these projects to the region's long-range transportation plan and getting them one step closer to receiving federal funding.

RTA to hold public meetings about the Red Line rapid transit extension

The Greater Cleveland RTA is evaluating the feasibility of extending its Red Line heavy rail service and/or HealthLine bus-rapid transit (BRT) service eastward. Both services currently end at the Louis Stokes Station at Windermere in East Cleveland. RTA is exploring the possibility of extending one or both of these services

RTA's HealthLine currently provides service    from Cleveland's Public Square to the Louis Stokes Station at Windermere in East Cleveland.

into the City of Euclid, near the Lake County line. This area is an RTA priority transit corridor, with high ridership, and density and development potential. RTA held public meetings in late 2013 to introduce the project and receive feedback on potential alternatives, including heavy rail, BRT and express bus service.

RTA is holding three public meetings next week to update participants about the study and provide more details about each alternative. Each meeting, held from 6-8 p.m., will feature a presentation and provide opportunities for public comment.

The study and public feedback will result in a preferred alternative that must be formally adopted by the RTA and NOACA Boards, as well as the cities of Cleveland, East Cleveland and Euclid.

Canal Exploration Center reopens to public

The former Canal Road Visitors Center, located at 7104 Canal Road near the intersection of Hillside Road in Valley View, reopens Saturday, May 17, after a yearlong renovation. Now  called Canal Exploration Center, the building features a store that sells goods reminiscent of the Canal Era and exhibits that allow guests to revisit a time when the Ohio and Erie Canal was a key part of the region's transportation system. The canal played an important role in the westward expansion of the U.S. and helped drive the regional economy. The Exploration Center is situated along the Towpath Trail and is also a stop on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.
