Alumni Masthead
September 2013

Greetings!

My favorite part of being the Alumni Relations Coordinator is learning how the lives of our alumni have been improved through learning here at Elgin Community College (ECC).  After all, that's our mission, "to improve prople's lives through learning."

How has ECC improved your life through learning?  Did you have a professor that was inspiring?  What have you been doing since you left ECC?  There's a story behind each ECC alum just waiting to be told.  What's yours?

Warm regards,

Diane Stredde

What's a Comptometer?
The Pioneer in 1952 was the equivalent of our current ECC Observer written by the students.  Here is an article from that publication.

COMPTOMETERS DEMONSTRATED TO COLLEGE OFFICE PRACTICE

Two representatives of the Felt and Tarrant Comptometer School of Chicago demonstrated the comptometer throughout the day last Monday.

The office training class was fortunate in being able to see one of the demonstrations.

One of the representatives from the company was a former Elginite and a graduate of Elgin High School.  She and another lady showed the class the operation of the machine at high speeds.

The Comptometer School was located in the Merchandise Mart in Chicago and had an open house on April 14, 1952.  Students were urged to attend.

A Comptometer is a calculator!  Does anyone remember these?
