Advent Reflections
Diocese of Newark

Thank you for continuing to journey with us through the season of Advent.  You are now journeying together with  over 700 people. As we come together in reflection and prayer, let us remember the God is continually seeking us out in the midst of the messiness of life.  May we come to know the grace that is there.

                        Scripture

For wickedness burned like a fire,
   consuming briers and thorns;
it kindled the thickets of the forest,
   and they swirled upwards in a column of smoke.

Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts
   the land was burned,
and the people became like fuel for the fire;
   no one spared another.

They gorged on the right, but still were hungry,
   and they devoured on the left, but were not satisfied;
they devoured the flesh of their own kindred;
Manasseh devoured Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh,
   and together they were against Judah.
For all this, his anger has not turned away;
   his hand is stretched out still.

Ah, you who make iniquitous decrees,
   who write oppressive statutes,
to turn aside the needy from justice
   and to rob the poor of my people of their right,
that widows may be your spoil,
   and that you may make the orphans your prey!
What will you do on the day of punishment,
   in the calamity that will come from far away?
To whom will you flee for help,
   and where will you leave your wealth,
so as not to crouch among the prisoners
   or fall among the slain?
For all this, his anger has not turned away;
   his hand is stretched out still.

Isaiah 9:18-10:4

Reflection

There are a lot of bad things happening in the world right now and thanks to the advancement of technology we are exposed to it all. I am sure most of you watch the news or know someone who watches the news and inform everyone else or maybe you have Facebook. All these things give me anxiety and make me question my role in the world as a peace seeker. There are days when I wonder if it is worth it since the world always finds a way to hurt itself over and over again. Then I remember God's Love, the beauty of his creation, his trust in humanity and I know in my heart that it is worth it. Be a peace seeker and a peace maker. Support your friends, family, coworkers, and strangers and pray for those who are suffering. I sometimes read someone's struggles on Facebook then pray for them at night in the hopes that it makes a difference. Every act that we project in the universe plays a role. So, dear, God loving folks, always put your best energy forward.

Prayer

Dear God,

You know my heart.

You know its goodness and selfishness.

Bless me and help always bring forth

the better parts of me.

 Help me be an instrument of your love in my world

and in the whole world.

Bless my family, friends, coworkers, and

all the people who make up my community.

Put your holy spirit in my heart

 so I always shine good light onto others.
