Advent Reflections
Diocese of Newark

Thank you for continuing to journey with us through this season of Advent. You are now journeying together with people from in multiple dioceses - over 700 people in all. As we come together in reflection and prayer, we join our voices in praise as we await the joyful coming.

Scripture

The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

As it is written in the prophet Isaiah,

'See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
        who will prepare your way;
the voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
"Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight"

John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, 'The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you withwater; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.'
Mark 1:1-8

Reflection

We are in the midst of Advent season, waiting and watching for the Christ child to be born.  Our spirits are high, our hopes and dreams lifting us up praying that all that is horrible in this world will be calmed when the Savior is born.

I am here, at the first Advent, watching John baptizing in the river Jordan, preparing us for the one who is to come, the one greater than all of us. We are dazzled by this bearded man in his measly clothing and in awe of John's majestic faith.  He listens to our sins, yet does not chastise as he gently anoints us with water.  We cling to his every word and the spirit that has brought us to this sacred place. Close your eyes, come with me and feel the water cool your head, hear the praises sung to the Lord God, feel the warmth of the sun, as our hearts swell with God's love. How electrifying it is to prepare thee the way of the Lord!

Prayer

Dearest Lord,

With each candle I light,

With each prayer that I say,

Fill me with your love, comfort, peace and amazing Grace,

As I celebrate this feast of Advent and the coming of the Christ Child. Amen.
