Advent Reflections
Diocese of Newark

Thank you for continuing to journey with us through this season of Advent. You are now journeying together with people from in multiple dioceses - over 700 people in all. As we come together in reflection and prayer, we join our voices in praise as we await the joyful coming.

Scripture

"But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God. I trust in the steadfast love of God forever and ever."

Psalm 52:8

Reflection

In this season of preparing for the birth of Christ, we have to deal with the fact that more and more things demand our attention.  We are pulled in many different directions and, as Christmas draws near, it becomes harder and harder to focus  on what is really important.  We must, therefore, leave time each day to reflect on the real meaning of the Advent season.

"See the one who would not take refuge in God, but trusted in abundant riches, and sought refuge in wealth!"  Instead of frantically trying to spend as much of our "abundant riches" as fast as we can, we should  take time in our busy schedule to reflect on where our abundant riches come from.  Are we in good health?  Do we have a warm place to  sleep  at night?  Do we feel  the love of family surrounding us.  If we do not, why is that and what can we do  about it?  With his birth, Christ came to us  to help us navigate the hazardous  journey of life;  to show us the beauty of life and to show us  the path to God and salvation through him.

Christ is the reason for the season.  God is the reason for the season.  "Come thou long expected Jesus, born to set thy people free.  From our sins and fears release us, let us find our rest in thee."*  With prayer,  Christ will guide us through the perilous journey that  we call Christmas and, show us the way to live a Godly and righteous life, always remembering  to  "proclaim His name because it is good".

Prayer

Dear Lord - "In the darkness I see light

   and find in it comfort,

       confidence,

           and cause for celebration,

for the darkness cannot overcome it;

and I rejoice to nourish it

     in myself,

         in other people

            and in the world

for the sake of him

   in whom it was born

       and shines forever;

               even Jesus the Christ.
