Advent Reflections
Diocese of Newark

Thank you for continuing to journey with us through this season of Advent. You are now journeying together with people from in multiple dioceses - almost 700 people in all. As we come together in reflection and prayer, we join our voices in praise as we await the joyful coming.

                                           Scripture

Do not fret yourself because of evildoers; *
do not be jealous of those who do wrong.

For they shall soon wither like the grass, *
and like the green grass fade away.

Put your trust in God and do good; *
dwell in the land and feed on its riches.

Take delight in God, *
who shall give you your heart's desire.

Commit your way to the Holy One and put your trust in God,
who will bring it to pass,

So that your righteousness may be clear as the light *
and your just dealing as the noonday.

Be still before God; *
for God wait patiently.

Psalm 37:1-7 from the St. Helena's Psalter

Reflection

"Be still before God; for God wait patiently."  The psalmist encapsulates Advent in those words so beautifully, and yet we often find it hard to do in this busy time of year.  Isn't it a wonder that for all the shopping, cooking, eating, celebrating, singing, and gifts, the thing we need to do the most - to be still - gets lost in the hustle and bustle?  Perhaps this year you might commit to spending just a few minutes at the end of the day thanking God for all that you have, and giving over in thanks a moment of silent prayer.  Think of it as a gift for the One who has given you so much.  And the really cool thing about it is...it is you who will receive far more than you give in those few moments each night.  It will truly be the best Christmas present you will ever receive.

Prayer

Most Holy One, help us to be still before you,

to wait patiently for you, to commit ourselves to your way,

putting our trust in you. Amen.
