Advent Reflections
Diocese of Newark

Thank you for continuing to journey with us through this season of Advent. You are now journeying together with people from in multiple dioceses - almost 700 people in all. As we come together in reflection and prayer, we join our voices in praise as we await the joyful coming.

                                            Scripture

Then he told them a parable: 'Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

'Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day does not catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.'

Every day he was teaching in the temple, and at night he would go out and spend the night on the Mount of Olives, as it was called. And all the people would get up early in the morning to listen to him in the temple.

Luke 21:29-38

Reflection

I live near a stream, and its waters have ever been a reflection of God for me.  It is constant, cleansing, singing, and beautiful, and to sit beside it is to be comforted and strengthened and renewed.  When I am anxious, I forget about this ready source of nourishment, flowing so near to my home.  I forget to go to it, this close friend.

Sometimes I do not guard my heart and it becomes weighed down by the worries of this life and, like a thick veil, they blind me.  I lose sight of the goodness and beauty and courage and love that are all around me.  Then, in his love and mercy, Jesus shakes me awake, his light breaking through my dim vision.  "Be alert at all times," he advises me, gently nudging.  "See the work of God's hands all about you and join in.  Be ready for me every moment," he says, "for I am coming to partner with you in your life.  I will bring rivers of living water and you will flow like your beloved stream."

Prayer

God of all creation, keep us aware of your never-failing love and mercy, that we might always be ready to answer your call to serve.  This we ask in the name of Jesus.  Amen.
