Lenten Reflections
Diocese of Newark

Thank you for joining us in prayer and reflection during this season of Lent. We will travel through daily scripture, reflection and prayer.  Additional people have been joining us each day. Please feel free to forward these reflections to others. We invite you to explore the other resources for the season found at the bottom of the page as we continue the journey together.

Scripture

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart.

Hebrews 12:1-3

 Reflection

We have all known the frustration of running as fast as we can but never seeming to get ahead, whether it is literally or figuratively.  We have had moments when everyone seems to disagree with us and we would rather give up than continue.  We have known people who were unkind to us and made us feel small or unimportant.  At times like these, it is important to look to the example of Jesus and set a goal for ourselves just as Jesus did.  We need to follow the course of his life and remember the goal which God had set for him and he, as a consequence, set for himself.  Even though there were many people who rebuked him, who would not listen to him and questioned his teachings, he perservered in telling all who would listen about the glories of God.  He "ran the race" to the very end because he knew that the prize of "sitting on the right hand of the throne of God" would be his reward.  He had a goal.  Because he was able to perseverve, to continue and not lose heart, he has saved us all by his death and resurrection.  We have the perfect example to follow when we run into obstacles and frustration in the "race" of life.  We follow Jesus on the path to God and we do not give up.

Prayer

Let us pray

Catch me in my anxious scurrying, Lord,

and hold me in this Lenten season:

hold my feet to the fire of your grace

and make me attentive to my mortality

that I may begin to die now

to those things that keep me

                  from living with you

                      and with my neighbors on this earth;

Catch me in my aimless scurrying, Lord,

and hold me in this Lenten season:

hold my heart to the beat of your grace

and create in me a resting place,

         a kneeling place

             a tip-toe place

where I can recover from the dis-ease of my grandiosities

which fill my mind and calendar with busy self importance-

and grant me light enough to walk boldly

         to feel passionately, (and)

                to love aggressively.

                          AMEN
