Lenten Reflections
Diocese of Newark

Thank you for joining us in prayer and reflection during this season of Lent. We will travel through daily scripture, reflection and prayer.  Additional people have been joining us each day. Please feel free to forward these reflections to others. We invite you to explore the other resources for the season found at the bottom of the page as we continue the journey together.

Scripture

It is written: "I believed; therefore I have spoken." Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you to himself. All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

2 Corinthians 4:13-18 (NIV)

Reflection

Belief is a simple recognition of being and doing. Belief is what sustains many and makes us a people who live with more freedom. Belief gives us a system of laws rooted in a rule of life.

Belief is what we share each time we proclaim and share our statement faith in the Nicene Creed. Belief is when we witness God's GRACE in the birth of a new life whether it be a baby, a puppy, or the tulips that break through the cold crust of a long winter. Belief is found in the beauty of finding a partner to share our lives with.

The belief Paul shares in his Epistle to the church in Corinth is that Jesus is our belief as we see our savior in one another. Belief is knowing that Jesus came to be with us and shared a new way with us - the way put forth in his mortal life to share a kind and loving God. The essence of all we do relies on our faith and community.

Thanksgiving for this gift is found in the many whom we touch in dark and lonely places by offering belief in a flawed and cruel world. Sharing this is a gift of GRACE that comes from within and is only visible by our actions.

Eternity is ours when we believe.

Prayer

 I believe for every drop of rain that falls, a flower grows.
And I believe that somewhere in the darkest night a candle glows.
I believe for everyone who goes astray;
Someone will come to show the way.
Yes, I believe, oh I believe.
I believe above the storm the smallest prayer will still be heard.
I believe that someone in the great somewhere hears every word.
Every time I hear a newborn baby cry;
Or touch a leaf or see the sky.
Then I know why I believe.

Every time I hear a newborn baby cry;
Or touch a leaf or see the sky
Then I know why I believe, I believe, Oh I believe.
