Lenten Reflections
Diocese of Newark

Thank you for joining us in prayer and reflection during this season of Lent. We will travel through daily scripture, reflection and prayer.  Additional people have been joining us each day. Please feel free to forward these reflections to others. We invite you to explore the other resources for the season found at the bottom of the page as we continue the journey together.

Scripture

Therefore, since through God's mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ.

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.

2 Corinthians 4:1-12 (NIV)

Reflection

The walk to Calvary in this Lenten season brings with it great joy as well as shame in Jesus' brutal and painful death. Through this pain, we are able to recognize the redemption of our lives. This is an opportunity to be closer not only  with God but with one another. To recognize the light of Christ in all and to see clearly that we are not to be ashamed.

Paul asks of us all, in this letter to the early Christians of Corinth, not to be blinded but to recognize salvation albeit at times with pain. That in the pain we share the light of Christ that we hold dear within our bodies and soul. The recognition of the light of Christ that dwells deep within each of us is another sign of who we are as a people of faith. This light is the gift of his teachings and one of these is the Eucharist that we share.

Now is not the time to conceal the light of Christ. Action is required and this action is simple and clear; share your faith by what you do. We are a people who believe in resurrection. Let's share it for all to embrace - God's infinite GRACE.

Prayer

Gracious and everliving God,

 you have set us upon a journey

to walk closer in harmony with one another;

 sharing ourselves, exposing our flaws,

 and bearing witness that with your GRACE

and the gift of your Son, we are saved. Amen.
