Lenten Reflections
Diocese of Newark

Thank you for joining us in prayer and reflection during this season of Lent. We will travel through daily scripture, reflection and prayer.  Additional people have been joining us each day. Please feel free to forward these reflections to others. We invite you to explore the other resources for the season found at the bottom of the page as we continue the journey together.

Scripture

What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up. If anyone speaks in a tongue, two - or at the most three - should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret.  If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and to God.

Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said.  And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop.  For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets.  For God is not a God of disorder but of peace - as in all the congregations of the Lord's people.

1 Corinthians 14:26-33

Reflection

I belong to a church that is being formed by two congregations that have come together in their journey in Christ.  We are working toward a unity not yet accomplished. We are not alone in our struggle as many churches face the challenge of combining or clustering. But it is in Christ we remember that each of us, however large or small our congregation, has a voice, has a spirit to share. Some are much bolder than others and will be louder than thunder; some of us are quiet and humble and speak only when asked.  But we all have God on our side; we all are gifted by the Spirit.  We come together, each one of us with a song, a story, a personal journey with Christ, an interpretation of how we want to worship with Christ, and all this combines to build up the church.  We must reach out and not ignore the silent who feel their thoughts or deeds are not spiritual enough to share; we need to respect the value of everyone's relationship with Christ and their prophesy, always remembering, that in the congregations of the Lord, God is not a God of disorder, but a God of peace, and with peaceful recognition of all, we can grow our congregations faithfully in Christ.

Prayer

God of peace, we ask you for guidance in all ways that support your Holy Church in whatever forms you so desire us to serve.

We ask that you help us to dream and to find new ways to proclaim the wondrous Spirit of your love.

We ask that you help us to listen to those whose desire it is to work and pray;

Help us to see and to know that our congregations make a difference in the world;

We ask you to help us acknowledge when we are being selfish, or boastful, when we have not let all share their experience of your love.

And God of peace, pray for us, so we might pray for others who do not know how glorious and delightful life on earth is when a God of Peace is our salvation.  Amen.
