Lenten Reflections
Christian Formation Commission

Thank you for joining us in prayer and reflection during this season of Lent. We will travel through daily scripture, reflection and prayer.  Additional people have been joining us each day. Please feel free to forward these reflections to others. We invite you to explore the other resources for the season found at the bottom of the page as we continue the journey together.

  Scripture

But when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought it was a ghost and cried out; for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, 'Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.' Then he got into the boat with them and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded.

 Mark 6:49-51

Reflection

"Jesus got into the boat with them," - the good news is that Jesus is ALREADY in the boat with us, however we still get scared, we still feel lost and we still cry out.  Sometimes I think that is because we picture Jesus as outside of ourselves and far away.  Sometimes we find it hard to see and feel the real presence of Christ among us and within us.  The disciples struggled with this too.  Jesus offers us the peace that surpasses all understanding.  When we get those glimmers of peace and feel Christ's presence we too are utterly astounded.  In this  season of Lent, our call is to be more mindful that Christ is in the boat with us.

A Prayer by Henri Nouwen

Dear Lord, you once said,

"The will of him who sent me

is that I should lose nothing

of all that he has given to me."

These words are a source of consolation this day.

They show that you are doing all that can be done

to keep me in your love.

They show me that indeed

you entered this world to save me,

to free me from the bonds of evil and sin,

and to lead me to your Father's house.

They reveal that you are willing

To struggle against the strong powers

Which pull me away from you.

Lord, you want to keep me, hold on to me,

Fight for me, protect me, help me, support me,

comfort me, and present me to your father.

It is indeed your divine task not to lose me!

and yet I am free.

I can separate myself from you,

and you will never take this freedom away from me.

Oh, what a wonder of love,

What a mystery of divine grace!

Please, Lord, let me freely choose for your love

so that I will not be lost to you.

Amen.
