Lenten Reflections
Diocese of Newark

Thank you for joining us in prayer and reflection during this season of Lent. We will travel through daily scripture, reflection and prayer.  Additional people have been joining us each day. Please feel free to forward these reflections to others. We invite you to explore the other resources for the season found at the bottom of the page as we continue the journey together.

Scripture

Sing aloud to God our strength;

     shout for joy to the God of Jacob.

Raise a song, sound a tambourine,

     the sweet lyre with the harp.

Blow the trumpet at the new moon,

     at the full moon, on our festival day.

For it is a statute for Israel,

     an ordinance of the God of Jacob.

He made it a decree in Joseph,

     when he went out over the land of Egypt.

     I hear a voice I had not known:

I relieved your shoulder of the burden;

     your hands were freed from the basket.

In distress you called, and I rescued you;

     I answered you in the secret place of thunder;

     I tested you at the waters of Meribah.

Hear, O my people, while I admonish you;

     O Israel, if you would but listen to me!

There shall be no strange god among you;

     You shall not bow down to a foreign god.

I am the Lord your God,

     who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

     Open your mouth wide and I will fill it.

But my people did not listen to my voice;

     Israel would not submit to me.

So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts,

     to follow their own counsels.

O that my people would listen to me,

     that Israel would walk in my ways!

Then I would quickly subdue their enemies,

     And turn my hand against their foes.

Those who hate the Lord would cringe before him,

     and their doom would last forever.

I would feed you with the finest of the wheat,

     and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.

Psalm 81

Reflection

The Psalms are the poetry in the Bible which restore and refresh us. However, they also show us the "human" side of our God. In this Psalm, it is obvious that God is vexed with his people. Although He has rescued them from their bondage in Egypt, they have turned away from Him and worshipped false gods. His reaction is understandable; He has given them a true path to righteousness and they have rejected it. "My people did not listen to my voice". Why? Because they followed their own counsels. "Hear--O Israel' if you would but listen to me!" This is a clear invocation to all of us to follow His path and "walk in (His) ways".

Prayer

Dear Lord,

     May we always "sing aloud to God our strength; (and) shout for joy to the God of Jacob". May we always be mindful of the straight path which God has shown us and follow it regardless of the temptations which may try to lead us astray. May we always hear God's voice in everything that we do and remember that our God is a loving and forgiving God but that we have an obligation to try to live a godly and righteous life so that He will not have to "admonish" us to listen to Him. For He is the Lord our God, always.

Amen.
