Lenten Reflections
Diocese of Newark

Thank you for joining us in prayer and reflection during this season of Lent. We will travel through daily scripture, reflection and prayer.  Additional people have been joining us each day. Please feel free to forward these reflections to others. We invite you to explore the other resources of the season found at the bottom of the page as we continue the journey together.

Scripture

And Jesus said to them...The sower sows the word.  These are the ones on the path where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them.  And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: when they hear the word, they immediately receive it with joy.  But they have no root, and endure only for a while; then, when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away.  And others are those sown among thorns: these are the ones who hear the word, but the cares of the world, and the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things come in and choke the word, and it yields nothing.  And these are the ones sown on the good soil: they hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.

Mark 4:13-20

Reflection

As one who spent years working on a farm, this parable of the sower and the seeds conjures up a clear picture for me of a field bordered on two sides by dirt roads, on another by a stone row, and on the last side by wild brambles that grow wherever the soil is not cultivated.

At planting time, we wouldn't dream of spreading costly seed on the hard-packed dirt of the road or among the rocks or prickly brambles.  No.  We spread seed in rich soil turned over by a plow and smoothed by a disk harrow and formed into neat beds by a bedder in which a straight row was marked by a row-marker.  A good deal of work went into preparing the soil to receive the seed and nurture it.

The way I see it, we have an important role in being ready to receive the word of God, in preparing a place for it to take root and grow in us.  Prayer and humility (from the same root word as "humus:" soil) open us; love and compassion soften us; longing for God makes us receptive.  Here are ways for us to prepare the soil of our souls to receive and nourish the seeds of God's wisdom and love so that we might bear the fruit of God's Holy Spirit in us.

Joan Chittester, O.S.B. writes about this process of spiritual formation thus:  "You can't get the spiritual life by waiting for it.  You have to reach for it.  Read things that gild your soul.  Turn your mind to prayer, to a conscious response to the God present here and now.  Remember who you are."  (The Rule of Benedict, p. 63)

Prayer

God of all creation, I long to receive what you long to give me.

Help me to be open to the power of your Spirit,

to the wisdom of your Word,

and to the love of your son Jesus, in whose name I pray.  Amen.
