Lenten Reflections
Diocese of Newark

Thank you for joining us in prayer and reflection during  the season of Lent. We will travel through daily scripture, reflection and prayer. Additional people have been joining us each day.  Please feel free to forward these reflections to others. We invite you to explore the other resources of the season found and the bottom of the page as we begin the journey together.

Tomorrow's Gospel is about Nicodemus seeking out Jesus to learn more about him.  You are invited to come to Trinity & St. Philip's Cathedral, 608 Broad Street, Newark, NJ at 5:30pm tomorrow, Sunday, March 15th  for Third Sunday Vespers.  The Rev'd Maggi Dawn will lead us into "Discovering Nicodemus - all that is hidden." For more information please click this link or go to the diocesan website - www.dioceseofnewark.org

Scripture

"And I said, 'Oh, that I had wings like a dove!  I would fly away and be at rest.  I would flee to a far-off place and make my lodging in the wilderness.  I would hasten to escape from the stormy wind and tempest.'"

Psalm 55:7-9

"Where can I go then from your Spirit?  Where can I flee from your presence?  If I climb up to heaven, you are there; if I make the grave my bed, you are there also.  If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand will lead me and your right hand hold me fast."

Psalm 139:6-9

Reflection

I cannot count the times in my life when I have  wanted to escape my life.  From deep grief upon the death of a beloved pet to out-of-control frustration with a professional colleague; from anxiety over a child's health to the empty space that a relationship has become, life is just too hard sometimes.  When we haven't the resources to sustain balance and we know we're just about to fall off the edge, we want "wings like a dove" that will take us to some far-off place of peace and rest.  Sometimes, in those times, we forget God.  Sometimes we feel as though God has abandoned us.

Psalm 139, verses 1-17, describe such an intimacy between God and us that it leaves no place where God isn't.  And how awesome is it that even if we "take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea," that even there-even in the most remote place, the darkest place-even there, God holds us fast?  God keeps us.  God keeps us.

Prayer

Gracious God, for whom darkness is not dark and

or whom no place I go is too far for you to reach,

 give me grace to see you wherever I have fled;

nd grant that I may know the endless depths of your care for me.

This I ask in the name of Jesus, through whom you revealed yourself

and your love to me.  Amen.
