Lenten Reflections
Diocese of Newark

Thank you for joining us in prayer and reflection during  the season of Lent. We will travel through daily scripture, reflection and prayer.  We invite you to explore the other resources of the season found and the bottom of the page as  we begin the journey together.

                                          Scripture

Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you should be in agreement and that there should be no divisions among you, but that you should be united in the same mind and the same purpose. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters. What I mean is that each of you says, 'I belong to Paul', or 'I belong to Apollos', or 'I belong to Cephas', or 'I belong to Christ.' Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power.

1 Corinthians  1:10-17

Reflection

St. Paul's appeal to the followers of Christ in Corinth speaks a clear message for the Church today.  How many of us cling tightly to those who have walked in our doors, saying "If we do that (insert here whatever new idea or change that applies), they (some part of the congregation) will leave."  What we have forgotten is that we are not baptized into St. Swithin's Episcopal Church, Holy Smokes Episcopal Church, or any other Episcopal Church.  For that matter, we are not baptized into the Episcopal Church.  We are baptized into Christ!  If we hold on so tightly to our identity as the four walls within which we worship, and rest that identity on who we have been as a congregation, rather than who we are called to be, we have lost our way.  We are called to be the body of Christ in the world today - to love and to serve all of God's creation.

Perhaps in Lent we can reflect upon our lives as a Christian people.  Are our congregations engaging together to be a living and vibrant proclamation by word and deed of the Gospel in our communities?  Or, are we clinging too closely to our separate identities, too tightly to our past, and too firmly to our own way?  One is a path to life, the other to death.  May we, as followers of Christ, always choose life.

Prayer

Most Gracious God, whose love for us is beyond measure,
help us to seek you in all people.
Enter our hearts, that we may love and
serve you in the world
as a people of common bond in Christ.  Amen.
