Advent Reflections
Diocese of Newark

Thank you for continuing to journey with us through the season of Advent. You are now journeying together with members of over 60 different congregations in multiple dioceses and over 550 people in all. As we come together in reflection and prayer, we join our voices in praise as we await the joyful coming.

 Scripture

"But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.  Remember then from what you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first."

Rev. 2:4-5

Reflection

Sometimes music makes me sway from side to side.  A line dance I know calls for one step forward followed by one step back.  On the basketball court, I watch a forward with the ball feint to one side and then drive ahead on the other side to the basket.  When I am sailing against the wind, I have to tack, first one way and then the other in order to move forward.  These rhythms remind me of my life with God.  I want always to be near to God, to follow Jesus like a shadow and walk in his footsteps.  Only then, something distracts me, or I try to follow the steps of another human being, or I think I need to fake it to avoid confrontation, or I plan a path of alternating direction.  I abandon the love that binds me to my Savior and I wander away.  Thank God that in his never-failing love, Jesus calls me to turn back, and helps me to see how I have fallen away, and leads me gently in the right path.  Without Jesus, I would be lost.

Prayer

Dear Jesus, light of the world and Lord of my heart,

show me the path of love you have laid before me.

Keep me in your way; and when I falter or when I stray,

bring me back to you.

For the sake of your love and for my salvation,

I ask this in your holy name.    Amen.
