Advent Reflections
Diocese of Newark

Thank you for continuing to journey with us through the season of Advent.  You are now journeying together with  members of over 60 different congregations in multiple dioceses and over 500 people in all.  As we come  together in reflection and prayer, we join our voices in praise as we await the joyful coming.

 Scripture

"To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; my God I put my trust in you...remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions; remember me according to your love."

Psalm 25:1,6

Reflection

Years ago, musicians Simon and Garfunkel sang a version of "Silent Night" backed up by the voice of a newscaster reporting world events.  The result was a contrast in dark and light, a sharp and disturbing juxtaposition of peace and war, of joy in Christ and endless sorrow about the condition of human society.  Advent presents us with the same kind of paradox:  we live in a world of sin, we suffer from our mistakes and poor choices, we walk in the dark.  AND we live in hope; we seek the light of God's countenance as she hovers over creation, ever ready to help.

Prayer

Gracious God, remember me according to your love that I may not only see through the darkness but may also be a beam of light for my neighbors, through Jesus Christ, in whom all things are possible.  Amen.
