Lenten Reflections
Christian Formation Commission

Greetings!

Thank you for joining us in prayer and reflection during this season of Lent. We will travel through daily scripture, reflection and prayer.  Additional people have been joining us each day. Please feel free to forward these reflections to others. We invite you to explore the other resources for the season found at the bottom of the page as we continue the journey together.

Scripture

Woe to him who builds his house by

unrighteousness,

and his upper rooms by injustice;

who makes his neighbors work for

nothing

and does not give them wages;

who says," I will build myself a

spacious house

with large upper rooms,"

and who cuts out windows for it,

paneling it with cedar,

and painting it with vermillion.

Are you a king

because you compete in cedar?

Did not your father eat and drink

and do justice and righteousness?

Then it was well with him.

He judged the cause of the poor

and needy;

then it was well.

Is not this to know me?

says the Lord.

But your eyes and heart

are only on your dishonest gain,

for shedding innocent blood,

and for practicing oppression and

violence.

Therefore thus says the Lord concerning King Jekoiakim son of Joshua of Judah:

They shall not lament for him, saying,

"Alas, my brother!", or "Alas, sister!"

They shall not lament for him, saying,

"Alas, lord!" or "Alas, his majesty!'

With the burial of a donkey he shall

be buried--

dragged off and thrown out beyond

the gates of Jerusalem.

Go up to Lebanon, and cry out,

and lift up your voice in Bashan;

cry out from Abarim,

for all your lovers are crushed.

I spoke to you in your prosperity

but you said, "I will not listen."

This has been your way from

your youth,

for you have not obeyed my voice.

The wind shall shepherd all your

shepherds,

and your lovers shall go into

captivity;

then you will be ashamed and

dismayed

because of all your wickedness.

O inhabitants of Lebanon,

nestled among the cedars,

how will you groan when pangs

come upon you,

pain as of a woman in labor!

Jeremiah 22:13-23

Reflection

The title of this 22nd chapter of the book of Jeremiah is Exhortation to Repent, which he does in the form of a poem. Somehow, looking at this portion of the poem, one is able to reflect on the words more easily as a poem than you would be able to if it was written out in long sentences. You can feel more easily the flow of the words when they are separated in the lines of the poem. "O inhabitants of Lebanon, nestled among the cedars, how will you groan"----is much more effective, I think, in the three lines of poetry. Having said that, the poem does exhort us to listen to God's voice. He tells us that we are selfish and greedy and that, if we do not listen, we will not be lamented in this life or the life to come. He tells us that material gains---big houses painted garish colors---are not going to make us happy. Being just and righteous and taking up the cause of the poor will help us to hear the voice of God. That will direct us on the right path.

Prayer

Help Me Listen

O Holy One

I hear and say so many words,

yet yours is the word I need.

Speak now,

and help me listen;

and, if what I hear is silence,

     let it quiet me,

           let it disturb me,

                   let it touch my need,

                         let it break my pride,

                                 let it shrink my uncertainties,

                                       let it enlarge my wonder.
