Lenten Reflections
Christian Formation Commission

Greetings!

Thank you for joining us in prayer and reflection during this season of Lent. We will travel through daily scripture, reflection and prayer.  Additional people have been joining us each day. Please feel free to forward these reflections to others. We invite you to explore the other resources for the season found at the bottom of the page as we continue the journey together.

Scripture

Thus said the Lord to me: Go and stand in the People's Gate, by which the Kings of Judah enter and by which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem, and say to them: Hear the word of the Lord, ye kings of Judah, and all Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, who enter by these gates. Thus says the Lord: for the sake of your lives take care that you do not bear a burden on the Sabbath day or bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem. And do not carry a burden out of your houses or do any work, but keep the sabbath holy, as I have commanded your ancestors. Yet they did not listen or incline their ear; they stiffened their necks and would not hear or receive instruction.

But if you listen to me, says the Lord, and bring in no burden by the gates of this city on the sabbath day, but keep the sabbath day holy and do no work on it, then there shall enter by the gates of this city kings who sit on the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they and their officials, the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and this city shall be inhabited forever. And people shall come from the towns of Judah and the places around Jerusalem, from the land of Benjamin, from the Shephelah, from the hill country, and from the Negreb, bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain offerings and frankincense, and thank you offerings to the house of the Lord. But if you do not listen to me, to keep the sabbath day holy, and to carry in no burden through the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day, then I will kindle a fire in its gates; it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem and shall not be quenched.

Reflection

Obviously, the Lord is very firm with Jeremiah in this passage. "Remember the Sabbath and keep it Holy". It is important to set aside some time to be totally with God, to reflect on his many blessings to us and to keep any other distractions to a minimum. It would be wonderful to think that we could set aside an entire day to this contemplation. There are some cultures where this is not only possible, but mandatory. Unfortunately, ours is not one of them. However, it is not only possible, but advisable, to make some time each day for God. You do not have to bring frankincense or grain or burnt offerings or even go to "the house of the Lord", but it is important to your spiritual health, not to mention your physical health, to take some time each day to be with the Lord. We do not need to fear that fire will devour our "palace", but the peace of mind that comes with the peace of the Lord will sustain us through all our comings and goings.

Prayer

"Holy One,

     untamed

       by the names

             I give you,

in the silence

     name me,

that I may know

     who I am,

hear the truth

     you have put into me,

trust the love

     you have for me,

which you call me to live out

                 with my sisters and brothers

                           in your human family."

from Guerrillas of Grace,Ted Loder, p.30

Help me to find a time in each day to be with you and to listen to what my heart tells me you want me to do.  AMEN
