Thirsty deserts will be glad;
barren lands will celebrate and blossom with flowers.
Deserts will bloom everywhere and sing joyful songs.
They will be as majestic as Mount Lebanon,
as glorious as Mount Carmel or Sharon Valley.
Everyone will see the wonderful splendor of the Lord our God.
Here is a message for all who are weak, trembling and worried:
"Cheer up! Don't be afraid.
Your God is coming"
Isaiah 35:1-4

Having a daughter living in Arizona, gives me the opportunity to visit the desert. Usually it is barren and desolate, which is what I expect. However, in May, the desert blooms. This is a most glorious sight. We in the East rarely have the chance to view such a dramatic change in nature. The floral colors are strong and vibrant. Isaiah was perhaps foretelling the coming of John the Baptist which we read about in Zechariah's song in today's Gospel. God's promise is very near, and very strong and vibrant.
Thank you Abraham, Thank you Isaiah, Thank you John the Baptist for reminding us of God's promise to us.

Prayer
O God, you have caused this holy night to shine
with the brightness of the true Light:
Grant that we, who have known the mystery of that Light on earth, may also enjoy him perfectly in heaven;
where with you and the Holy Spirit he lives and reigns,
one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.
