Advent Reflections
Christian Formation Commission
Greetings!

Thank you for continuing to journey with us through the season of Advent.  You are now journeying together with  members of over 60 different congregations in multiple dioceses.  As we come  together in reflection and prayer, we join our voices in praise as we await the joyful coming.

                        Scripture

Our soul waits for you; *
you are our help and our shield.

Indeed, our heart rejoices in you, *
for in your holy Name we put our trust.

Let your loving-kindness, O God, be upon us, *
as we have put our trust in you.

Psalm 33:20-22 (St. Helena Psalter)

Reflection

In this busy time of the year, as we rush about making Christmas celebration preparations, where are we placing our trust?  In whom?  In what?  Is it having the "perfect" Christmas (in whatever way we imagine that to be)? Is it in the presents, tree, parties, or decorations?  Perhaps if we were to reflect on the longing in our souls, we would find that, like the Psalmist, we are waiting for the hope of God - in our hearts and in the world.  The yearning for God comes from deep within us, and cannot be filled with bright wrappings and tinsel, but only with the light that permeates our souls - the light that we await in Advent.  The light of God incarnate.

Prayer

God, mother of all creation, enter our waiting hearts.

Be born anew in us, that we may,

though the power of the Holy Spirit,

spread that light, which is the hope of the world,

to all who live in darkness.  Amen.
