Advent Reflections
Christian Formation Commission

Greetings!

Thank you for continuing to journey with us through the season of Advent. You are now journeying together with members of over 60 different congregations in multiple dioceses and over 350 people in all. As we come together in reflection and prayer, we join our voices in praise as we await the joyful coming.

 Scripture

And he said, 'Go and say to this people:

"Keep listening, but do not comprehend; keep looking, but do not understand."  Make the mind of this people dull, and stop their ears, and shut their eyes, so that they may not look with their eyes, and listen with their ears, and comprehend with their minds, and turn and be healed.'

Then I said, 'How long, O Lord?' And he said:

'Until cities lie waste without inhabitant, and houses without people, and the land is utterly desolate; until the Lord sends everyone far away, and vast is the emptiness in the midst of the land.  Even if a tenth part remains in it, it will be burned again, like a terebinth or an oak whose stump remains standing when it is felled.' The holy seed is its stump.

Isaiah 6:9-13

Reflection

Wow! This is a tough God! He must be really angry. As a former elementary school teacher, there were some years when I was just as happy as the kids were to see the last day of school. But there were always a few who I would miss and be curious how they made out in the years ahead. I have sometimes wondered whether their experience was changed by a challenging environment created by others. Perhaps God felt the same way about the people of Jerusalem. Most were sinning beyond belief, but there were a few who were not.  As we move through Advent, let us continue to hope, pray for and know God's grace.

Prayer

Teach me, O God, the way of your statutes, and I will observe it to

the end.

Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with

my whole heart.

Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it.  Amen.
