It's almost here!  The Fresh and Easy shopping night is this coming Thursday October 25th from 4 to 8 pm...5% of ALL sales will be donated to Donlon!  So please come by and encourage your friends and neighbors to grab some groceries too!  We are still in need of volunteers, so please email Leslie Mehta (Lsmehta@mac.com) to help out...it's a fun and easy way to give back to Donlon!  Hope to see you all there!!!

Halloween Parade News

Halloween will be observed on October 31st, which is a late start Wednesday.  All Kindergartners will attend school from 9:15 AM to 12:35 PM on this day and grades 1-5 will dismiss at 3:00 PM.  There will be a school-wide costume parade for grades K-5, out on the blacktop beginning at 9:35 AM.  There will be a certain portion saved for the students and a certain area for parents and families to stand and watch the parade.  If it rains our parade will be around the outside of B and C pods.

A school policy about costumes and weapons was sent home that all parents should read. There are disciplinary consequences for failing to follow that policy.

Too much Halloween candy? Donate it to our Troops!

From November 1 - 6 in the front office, we'll be collecting excess Halloween candy for Operation Gratitude (www.operationgratitude.com), who will pack the candy into holiday care packages for our soldiers.

Wrapped candy of any type can be donated.  Simply place it in the donation boxes in the front office after Halloween.  Please do not buy extra candy for this purpose; we will receive a ton of candy just from the excess.  If you can, please separate chocolate and other candy that might melt from the hard/sugar candies as we will need to sort these before shipping. Corovan Moving and Storage is providing us with free shipping, so there is no cost to our school.

We would also love to collect pictures, drawings and letters for the troops.  You can place these in the front office too.  Letter writing guidelines are available from Operation Gratitude at http://www.operationgratitude.com/get-involved/write-letters/.  Please encourage your children to participate!

Donlon Family Portrait Fundraiser

We have the perfect opportunity for you to obtain beautiful family portraits before the Holidays, while helping support Donlon.  Jeff Firestone from Firestone Photography is offering Donlon parents a great deal. He will donate all sitting fees to our school as well as a percentage of all sales. The sitting fee is a very reasonable $50. There will also be an option to buy the digital copy of picture once a portrait at least 8x10 has been purchased. All portraits will be taken on Saturday, November 10th at Sycamore Grove Park in Livermore. If you have any questions or if you would to sign up for the time slot that works best for your family please contact Jane Mihelcic: mihelcic@comcast.net or 925-484-9655. The final date for sign ups will be Saturday November 3rd. Thanks for your support.

Benefits of Technology in the Classroom

We are very fortunate at Donlon to have dedicated staff who are anxious to increase the potential for learning through the use of technology. Our classrooms are not fully equipped with the technological resources that are demanded in today's world of education. We pride ourselves in maintaining a high tradition of excellence. Advancements in classroom technology are the path we need to take to be progressive in both instruction and student learning.

When Donlon utilizes technology like LCD projectors, document cameras and computers with Internet access, students are more engaged, more motivated, and more excited about learning. A smart classroom enables teachers to prepare dynamic multimedia lessons. Teachers are no longer limited to presenting information from a textbook. With access to the Internet, teachers have the entire world of the web at their fingertips.

The benefits of technology in the classroom go far beyond access to current information. When students are invited to participate in technology-based learning, they take ownership of their educational process. Students no longer sit passively while teachers talk at them - they are now an essential part of the lesson. When students are motivated to learn and to work cooperatively, the benefits of technology in the classroom are clear for all to see.

How can you help?

Do you work for a company or know of one that offers educational and/or technology grants?

Do you work for a company or know of one that is upgrading their computers and interested in donating the ones they are replacing?

Do you know of someone who is interested in being an anonymous donor?

Please contact PFC Technology Chair Michelle Lemus directly at chellelemus@comcast.net if you or someone you know can help. Help us create an engaging and lively learning environment in which our students thrive!

boyoutdoors Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education for our fabulous 5th graders is just around the corner!  Each year our 5th grade children look forward to the big OUTDOOR EDUCATION week!  They go with their teachers on a bus, learn with counselors outside, go to the tide pools and even do a night hike before returning to their cabin!  It's a long standing tradition that 5th graders look forward to and feel like it is THE event in 5th grade.

Voluntary fundraising to earn money for this experience now thru October 26th.  Please support your 5th graders!  Parents please work with your 5th grader to earn funds to help defer the overall cost.  Donations and or fundraising amounts must raise enough funds for all 5th grade students. Inadequate donations or fundraising will result in the cancellation of the wonderful opportunity.

A to Z, our local school supporting fundraiser is assisting Donlon again this year.  Approximately 45% of each item sold will go towards the Outdoor Ed fund.  There are sweets-always anticipated this time of year, Enviro Vogue bags and NEW this year Totally Green Herb Gardens by DuneCraft!  Very exciting items! Thank you for taking a look at the offerings when you are approached by your favorite 5th grader!

DELIVERY DATE: MINIMUM DAY WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 14th 11:30-1:00
