Zika Virus Information

Several W&J community members have made inquiries regarding information about the Zika virus. The link below contains information that may answer some questions regarding transmission, risks, and prevention. Please contact Student Health Services at (724) 223-6047 with any questions or for additional information.

What is Zika?
Zika is a disease caused by the Zika virus that is spread to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting for several days to a week. People usually don't get sick enough to go to the hospital, and they very rarely die of Zika.

Featured speakers are:
  • Dianne Anderson, Former Executive Director, Great Lakes Institute for Energy Innovation, Case Western Reserve University
  • Maria Hanley, Energy Industry Analyst in the Office of Electric Reliability, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)
  • Gregory F. Reed, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Energy and of the Electric Power Initiative; Professor at the Swanson School of Engineering, University of Pittsburgh

Alpha Phi Omega is a national coeducational service organization founded on the principles of Leadership, Friendship and Service. Avis Arbor Women & Children's Center

City Mission is in need of child-care volunteers at Avis Arbor Women and Children's Shelter. Avis Arbor is a safe place for women and children to seek the help they need. The women at Avis Arbor are enrolled in programs where they receive treatment or medical care, legal services and biblical counseling. During these sessions, the women must leave their children at the shelter. Selected volunteers will watch the children during this time so residents will not have to miss these appointments crucial to their recovery. Interested W&J students, please contact volunteer@washjeff.edu.

Attention all Sophomores, Juniors, & Seniors

We are now accepting applications for the Student Healthcare Coaches Internship, which will count as a four credit course during the Fall of 2016.

As a participant in this program, students will attend three weeks of training at Jefferson Hospital where they will be taught by, and allowed to shadow, practicing healthcare professionals. Following training, students will be assigned a patient who has recently been discharged from the hospital and will conduct weekly visits to the home of this patient. By helping their patients with medications, treatment plans, disease management, and other aspects of daily living, the Student Healthcare Coach will help to keep these patients out of the hospital, thereby increasing their quality of life.

This program is open to any student who will be a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior in the Fall of 2016. While this opportunity provides an excellent method to gain patient contact, shadowing, and community service experience for pre-health students, it is open to students of any major.

Any interested Students should contact Joshua Makepeace (jmakepeace@washjeff.edu, office 002A in the Ski Lodge) with any questions or to acquire an application form.
