National Coming Out Day Film Screening: The Case Against 8
Sunday at 6:00 pm in the Media Room
The film chronicles the Supreme Court case that overturned Proposition 8, California's ban on same-sex marriage. Pizza and a brief discussion will follow the film screening.

Vira Heinz Scholarship

Info Session this Thursday at 5:00 pm
The Office of Study Abroad would like to draw your attention to the Vira I. Heinz Scholarship Program for Women in Global Leadership. This award combines a study abroad scholarship with a global leadership development program. Program participants will receive a scholarship of at least $5,000 for study abroad during the summer 2016; in addition, they will participate in a series of leadership development events and community engagement. As one of 16 participating colleges, W&J is able to nominate up to three students for the program each year.

Women who fall within one of the four indicators of diversity as designated by the Heinz Endowments (race/ethnicity; GLBTQQ; disability; or financial need) are especially encouraged to apply. If you are a freshman, you are welcome to attend the info session, but you must wait to apply until you are a sophomore.
 
Applications are due by November 1, 2015. Again, this opportunity is specifically for women.

Recreation Center Groundbreaking

Thursday at 5:30 pm
The Office of Development & Alumni Relations would like to invite the W&J community to join us this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. for the James David Ross Family Recreation Center groundbreaking. The recreation center represents the second phase of the Athletic Complex Renovation and Expansion project. We hope that you will join us in supporting our coaches and student athletes! 

 

The groundbreaking will take place on the former tennis courts next to the Henry Memorial Gym. 

Energy Lecture Series

Second Program of the Grid Academy
Don't miss the second program in the Grid Academy Series, The Smart Grid: Innovating for Efficiency and Reliability.  Featuring Dr. Gregory Reed of the University of Pittsburgh's Swanson School of Engineering and a panel of three experts, the program will be presented on Wednesday, October 14 at 7:00 pm in Yost Auditorium, Burnett Center.  For more information contact Diana Stares at dstares@washjeff.edu.
 
Semester Abroad Showcase

October 29 & November 19
Mark your calendars! The Office of Study Abroad is excited to announce the fall 2015 Semester Abroad Showcase dates: on October 29 and November 19 at 5:30 pm in the Media Room, come hear all about study abroad from a W&J student's perspective. There will be free snacks, and we will do a drawing for a prizes! After students share stories about their off-campus study experience you will have the chance to mingle and ask questions.  This is also a great opportunity to learn about scholarships and grants for study abroad!
 
Now is the perfect time to plan your fall 2016 semester abroad ! Do you want to hone your language skills in France? Explore a different culture in Hong Kong? Study business in The Netherlands? College Access Youth Mentoring Program

Applications Due Today!
Were you unsure about how to begin your college search? Apply for financial aid? Unsure if college was even for you? So many of our young community members have these same concerns! YOU can be the work to help them answer those questions. W&J is selecting several of our students to serve as mentors in the W&J College Access Program. Mentors will be partnered with one or two local high school students who are beginning their college search process, and will help them navigate the process through monthly meetings, workshops, and follow up. Mentors will commit to the program for the full year, and will receive a stipend for their participation. Apply through Spire here! Application deadline extended to October 5! Questions? October Produce to People

Deadline to Register is Today!
The Greater Washington County Food Bank Produce to People food distribution is in need of volunteers on Tuesday, October 6 from 8:00 am - 1:00 pm at the Washington County Fairgrounds. Produce to People is the Food Bank's large-scale produce distribution program. Volunteers are needed to assist with anything from passing out the produce, to acting as runners and support. Volunteers can sign up for the full experience or for shorter shifts. Transportation is provided, and a shuttle leaves campus on the hour each hour and returns to campus on the half hour. Student volunteers are eligible to win a $50 gift card to a local restaurant or store! To register to volunteer, fill out the form here. Please register today by 5:00 pm.

Houston Pumpkinfest Volunteer Opportunities

This Weekend
Volunteers are needed the evening of Thursday October 8 to help set up chairs and benches in the large pavilion area and Friday, Saturday and Sunday October 9, 10, 11 to help run timers for inflatable bouncers, take tickets, wash pumpkins, help children decorate pumpkins, and various other tasks.
