President's Message

 June Zeeh

Dear

Greetings!

December is upon us, and it offers many opportunities to use music in ways that will bring joy to others. It seems that this is a most opportune time for us, as music instructors, to encourage our students to use their musical skills to bring enjoyment to family and friends.

The Piano PlayTogether on November 17 brought joy to many students, parents, teachers, and friends. Dallas Weekley and Nancy Arganbright were most delightful in their guidance of our program. We thank them for bringing their talents to our stage. They also inspired us at the Fall Workshop on November 15.   A huge thank you to all of those MAPTA members who participated in and helped with the workshop and the PlayTogether.

Our next general meeting will take place on January 14, 2014, at Heid Music, 7948 Tree Lane, Madison. Debbie Yee will be speaking on teaching special needs students.

The next board meeting will also be at Heid Music on Tuesday, January 21, 2014.

Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year!

June Zeeh

Honors Recital Auditions - Registration Deadline:  Wednesday, January 15, 2014

The Honors Festival auditions and recitals are offered to the advancing, pre-college students of MAPTA teachers, Grades 4-12.  The Grade 4 students will receive comments only.  The Grade 5-12 students may be chosen for the recital.  Students may play one or two pieces with the total playing time not to exceed ten minutes.  All music must be played from memory. Winners are chosen for an Honors recital one week later.  We are pleased and honored to welcome Professor Jessica Johnson, UW-Madison, as this year's judge.

Details including the specific requirements for eligibility, literature, etc. are listed in the "Events and Programs:  Honors Festival" section of the MAPTA website.  Please read this carefully.

Paper registrations are due by Wednesday, January 15, 2014, 5:00 p.m.  We have created a new registration form this year.   Paper forms from past years will not be accepted.  Please recycle old ones.

The 2014 registration blank is online now.  You can retrieve a copy by going to the "Members Area" of our website and clicking "Event Forms" then "Honors Festival PDF."   Please send the forms (one separate form per student) plus one check for the total number of students ($20 per entry) to Shu-Ching Chuang, 509 Everglade Drive, Madison, WI 53717.

Auditions are Saturday, February 1, 2014, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the Madison Christian Community Church, 7118 Old Sauk Blvd., Madison.  Winners will have the chance to perform on the recitals held Sunday, February 9, 2014, in Morphy Hall at the UW-Madison Humanities Building.  Whether or not your students are playing, these recitals are a great chance to hear the amazing skills and talents of the young musicians in our community.

If you have questions, please let us know.   We are here to support you and your students.

MAFOP:  2014 Piano Playathon

Connie Jones and Renee Farley

Have you checked your mailbox? Have you seen it? Did you file it away? Have you talked to your students (and/or parents) about participating next February?

Just what you need at this time of year. Questions about something you need to do. As if you don't have enough on your plate already.

BUT..... Now is the time to be thinking of next year's Piano Playathon on Saturday, February 8, 2014.  We will be gathering pledges for the American Family Children's Hospital, Child Life Program. It is such a worthy cause, and students respond so well to the positive feedback they get from those pledging and those listening.

Please think seriously about including your studio in this effort to share talent, time, and gifting. We think it's a wonderful way to teach children the joy of giving to others.

Questions? Want to schedule a time slot?

PIano PlayTogether:  Fascinating Rhythm

Denise Pilmer Taylor

The 2013 Piano PlayTogether was a fantastic success!  On November 17, around 200 area piano students performed piano ensembles at Mitby Theater to the conducting of Dallas Weekley and Nancy Arganbright. Many MAPTA teachers were instrumental in making sure the event ran smoothly: Lana Robotewskyj and Denise Taylor as co-chairs, with the following members on the committee: Gloria Chuang, Renee Farley, Judy Ferreri, Linda Johnson, Polly Kuelbs, Patty Ladpli, Pamela McMullen, Stacy Regehr, Cynthia Stephan, Shad Wenzlaff, June Zeeh. Nineteen teachers had students participate in the event.

Special thanks go to Patty Ladpli for registration and conductor arrangements, Shad Wenzlaff and Patty Ladpli (among others) for rehearsal help, all the Heid Music rehearsal conductors, Farley's Pianos, Gloria Chuang for piano technician, Cynthia Stephan for Mitby seating, Deb Ferris and Shad Wenzlaff for the narration script, June Zeeh and Gloria Chuang for calligraphy, and Shad Wenzlaff for certificate template and programs. Special thanks go to Cynthia Stephan and her husband for providing a delicious teachers' lunch at the dress rehearsal. And still there were a lot of other jobs that needed doing, too numerous to thank individually. We couldn't have run such a smooth concert without all the volunteers at the rehearsal table, the bow sign, and the concert and backstage monitors. This event really shows what dedicated teachers make up MAPTA. Thank you!!!

Exploring Music Resources

This month and next will feature submissions from MAPTA member Gregory Hustad, who has pored through some of the higher levels of the latest NFMC bulletin. Below are a few items he has sampled:

From "Medium Difficult III"

Linn, Jennifer. "Nocturne d'Esprit," from Piano Recital Showcase, Romantic Inspirations (Hal Leonard). Pleasant piece with lots of Chopinesque passage work. This book, labeled Early Advanced repertoire, includes various other original piano solos, two of which are in the Difficult II category. The remaining ones are as follows (not in NFMC bulletin):

Klose, Carol. "Prelude No. 1." Pleasant, with multiple time signatures.
Klose, Carol. "Rondo Capriccioso." Nice, stormy A minor; rather fun.
Linn, Jennifer. "Arabesque." Lots of freely changing triads.
Tsitsaros, Christos. "Nocturne." Reminiscent of Chopin E minor, Op. 72 #1.
Tsitsaros, Christos. "Valse d'Automne". Delightfully bittersweet tone, sort of "chanteuse" style.

From "Difficult Class I"

Alexander, Dennis. "Danza Spiccata" (Alfred)  Delightful little excursion into 7+5 / 8 meter.

Austin, Glenda. Jazz Suite No. 2 (Willis, 2001) Pieces I and III are on the NFMC list but all three (including II, a delightfully quirky waltz) are solid and original.

Bilotti, Anton. "The Firefly" (Fischer). Very appealing, fast but easy to read; somewhat Impressionistic.

Hartsell, Randall. "Sea Tempest" (Willis). Breezy, perpetual motion in 8th notes.

MacDowell, Edward. Six Fancies, Op. 7 (Alfred). Mostly familiar harmony and predictable sentiments. Two are on the list from this collection:

"To a Hummingbird" (no. 2). Very busy, indeed; much like an etude.
"An Elfin Round" (no. 6). Quarter note at 184 at the end!

Rocherolle, Eugénie. Cuatro Rumores Hispanicos (Kjos). "Sospiros Cariñosos" and "Los Gitanos" are both on the list. Likeable, if not a bit clichéd.

Rollin, Catherine. "Lyric Nocturne" and "Summer Splendor" from Lyric Moments (Alfred)  Bland but agreeable.

Tcherepnin, Alexander. Bagatelles, Op. 5 (Alfred). These will be great fun for students who don't require familiar and predictable harmony all the time. Nos. 1 and 10 are on the NFMC list.

Next month will feature selections from Difficult Class II category of the most recent NFMC bulletin.  Do you have thoughts to share about teaching repertoire? Articles encouraged; please email Denise Taylor for info.
