Executive Director Vitello Begins Assignment with Board Planning Session

VitelloChris Vitello did not waste any time as he began his new assignment on September 1.  A planning session between MCHF Board and Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) administration was held on September 24.  The session was two-fold - it introduced Vitello to many of the Board members and provided input from both the Board and key MDC officials to make certain we are on the same page.  The focus of the Foundation is to advance the conservation and appreciation of fish, forest and wildlife resources by applying financial resources to the priorities of MDC in collaboration with donors and other partners. The meeting allowed the Board, MDC staff and Vitello to discuss priorities and possible fund-raising efforts for the next few years.  They also discussed ways to better communicate with donors, marketing and the possibility of a new web site to better fit the needs of both MCHF and the people we serve. Mr. Vitello is working closely with the Foundation's Communications Specialist Donna Richards to review policies and procedures of the Foundation and to streamline some of the processes that will alleviate additional costs for the Foundation.  The Foundation currently utilizes over 90% of its funding for specific projects, keeping administrative costs to a minimum.  Current funding sources are derived from MCHF License Plate sales, Stream Stewardship Trust Fund and private donations. To make a tax-deductible donation to the organization visit www.mochf.org or send a check made payable to MCHF, PO Box 366, Jefferson City, MO  65102.

Stream Stewardship Trust Fund (SSTF) Agreement Approved

In July a revised in-lieu fee agreement between MCHF and the US Army Corps of Engineers was approved and the Foundation is happy to begin a new era of partnership with the Corps.  Since 2007 MCHF has received approximately $3 million in mitigation-derived funding from the Corps for projects across Missouri. The SSTF uses the funding to complete on-the-ground stream improvement projects, establish permanent easements or acquire land. Through this program valuable stream projects are completed and lands are protected and managed.  The program also provides a quality mitigation opportunity for developers. Some of the funding in the past has provided aquatic organism passage projects at low-water crossings. These projects not only enhance stream habitats and benefit aquatic organisms,  but also provide better and safer conditions at public road crossings. Other projects funded through SSTF include bank stabilization projects installed in cooperation with landowners and selected conservation easements. The new agreement will require additional monitoring of projects and will generate additional funds for the Foundation to increase support for statewide conservation projects and grants.

MCHF Funds Partnership Grants
The MCHF Board approved nine partnership grants totaling $23,975 in projects during its August  meeting. Projects ranged from Discover Nature Girls Camps to prairie restoration and prairie bird monitoring, wounded warrior hunts and an outdoor classroom. During the past two years the partnership grants funded have totaled over $125,000. To be considered for a MCHF partnership grant, applications must be sponsored and submitted by MDC staff who may work with other organizations and partners for projects for both funding and staffing. Projects submitted to MCHF must be an approved project of MDC. Currently there are two grant cycles per year. To fund these partnership grants, MCHF uses funds from MCHF Conservation License Plate sales, the Stream Stewardship Trust Fund and private donations from individuals and organizations who donate for non-specified projects. For a listing of projects supported by MCHF, please visit our web site and click on selected projects or the project database. If you would like to contribute to the partnership grant program you may do so online or by sending a check to MCHF, PO Box 366, Jefferson City, MO 65102.

The Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation is a nonprofit, charitable organization founded in 1997 to help meet financial needs placed on natural resource conservation and conservation-related outdoor recreation.

The Foundation is separate from the Missouri Department of Conservation but supports that agency's mission of protecting the state's fish, forestry, and wildlife resources for all Missourians. We are governed by a volunteer board comprised of conservation, community, and business leaders. By working with Missouri Department of Conservation staff, who partner with conservation groups statewide, we fund projects that immediately address conservation and outdoor recreation needs. Since it was created in 1997, the Foundation has provided more than $12 million for conservation projects. The Foundation receives funding from several sources, including Conservation Heritage License Plate donations; private donations from individuals, businesses, and organizations; and payments to the Stream Stewardship Trust Fund.

The Foundation offers volunteer opportunities and a variety of conservation giving opportunities. If you would like to speak to a Foundation staff person for more information, call 1-800-227-1488.
